I am planning to move to prague for various reasons, to live, to get a business, and of course to have fun! In prague can a homosexual expect to live comfertable and freely?, Do they have rights? Are there bars, clubs, saunas etc...I've heards its more liberal when it comes to sexual orientation! Is that true...Can anyone compare it to NYC..and tell me if its any better or worse...As far as interactions, expressions and relationships are concerned... Thanks :D

    Hi Nomad,

Never slept with a man. No intention of doing so. No idea if I`m the right person to answer your post, but I think you should take into account other things, such as the language, job/business opportunities, culture etc., which will become of vital importance as soon as you enter the CR..

It`s not illegal to be a confirmed bachelor, as a matter of fact, some have said YES for the same-sex marriages, but from what I read, the stance on this highly debatable issue among people in power is rather NO. They are more concerned about media influence on children rather than about the whole point of getting married to the same sex. So it`s more of a moral issue than anything else. I feel it that way at least.

NYC is a bad example for comparison. I take it for granted that as far as diversity goes, hence a higher degree of tolerance, Prague is no match for the big apple.

There`s however one aspect, the aspect of kissing in public, which shocks many Americans visiting the CR for the first time. It`s quite normal for young Czechs to kiss in the city centre at whatever hour and in front of whoever it might be. Normal for Czech kissers, normal for Czech passers-by, but way too out of place for Americans.

Having said that, you`ll probably become, at least once, a target of mockery if seen hand in hand with your boyfriend. Some Czechs love to comment on other people`s appearance, gait and so on. No wonder then that homesexuals are more likely to be made fun of than other people who don`t stick out.

I haven`t searched for any gay bars or clubs, but there must be some.

    I wish you good luck.

PS Give your idea of leaving NYC for Prague in search of a better life a thorough re-think. NYC`s cold and dirty as hell but........

    PS1 Prague isn`t much warmer

Thank you Karel for your feed back and insight.....I think for me its a matter of taste, I am just so much more attractive to european guys ;-), I think they are broad minded, more so than many New Yorkers, Although Praguers might be cold I dont think they'll be as cold as New Yorkers, I think it has to do with their rich history. Where I am right now, (which is where I currently work) I made good friends with slovak soldiers for the last seven months, they are just so nice, warm and in many ways genuin. I go to their camp and have parties with them, and they seem to be really interested in what I have to say and my background!, Although there were alot of Czechs I didn't get to talk to any of them, or made friends with them unfortunately, But I sense they are cool...I mean when we had a hip hop party here, Everyone was just standing around staring at the ceilings but the czechs soldier didn't care, they jumped into the middle of the dance floor in just started dancing..They didn't care they were just having fun, while the amercan soldiers just stood around looking....!!! Although slovakia is a bit more relegious than CR, I dont think there isn't a big different in their way of life...The slovaks told me if I greeted with a smile they'll always be welcoming. I thing its a sign of a friendly gesture when you greet someone with a smile!, But not in nyc, If you smile and greet someone, they will look at you strange and as if you were about to mug them...they will quickly walk away.. But your right I should visit CR and check it out be drawing general conclusions...Thanks Karel

Well, no place on this planet is very keen to homosexuals, but I guess Prague is OK... it's probably cause people there are used to have huge crowds of tourists throughout the year; they've seen it all, more or less.
I've been walking hand in hand with my man in Prague, there were some funny looks, but that way all...
There are plenty gay bars/clubs (go to some specialized web site and find out more). The best time I've had was in Tingl-Tangl club - transvestites there are just mad. And the crowd is not exclusively gay/lesbian: I've seen many straight couples there. And if you ever find yourself in DownTown Cafe, do me a favour: give a big tip to those cute waiters.

P.S. And I must say this: of all the places I've been, Prague has the most cute guys walking around...

Thanks Tristen!, Your definitly right about the cute guys, I've seen alot of Czech and Slovak soldiers here where I work..And boy they are hot!! :) , I am not a flamming queen or anything, but I'd like to be in a city where being gay is not frowned about. Beautiful city, beautiful people what else could I want from Prague...Heheh..

Why would anyone on this planet be keen toward homosexuality?

    Hi Nomad,
when you decide you can send me a note becuase one my gay friend, who is by the way really great person, might give you some recomendation and more insight as he lives in Prague for years now. He might even give you a tour. He's really sweet.
Just please don't expect too much from Prague. It's not a gay paradise. I think you can have as much fun there as any other straight guy but you won't get any priviledge :)
well, have a good time there!!
