I'm preparing to move to Prague for a 5-month stay (lucky lucky lucky me!) and need to bring more than the standard two checked pieces of luggage for all my "stuff." (Okay, maybe I don't NEED to bring everything, but ...) Anyway, I'm trying to figure out if it would be cheaper and easier to simply pay the fee for extra baggage when I fly over in January, or whether I should ship a box or two ahead. The places I've checked online (UPS and FedEx) charge approximately two arms and a leg to do this, if I'm reading the rate charts correctly. :shock: For example, the hypothetical case I entered ended up pricing out at over $250. Has anyone shipped boxes to Prague? What shipping company did you use? How much did it cost? And how long did it take? Any assistance greatly appreciated! Susan
Hi Susan, It's good to hear that you're coming to Prague for a 5-month stay! You must be excited! I don't know if my experience will be applicable to your situation, but here it is anyway. When Jeff and I were moving to the Czech Rep. last year, we used three ways of shipping out stuff: Crown Relocations for the main move (irrelevant in your case), USPS for some miscellaneous boxes, and we checked in a computer box on our flight, with a computer in it. To our surprise, the airline didn't charge us a dime for the extra baggage and they didn't damage it either, so that was great! The post office worked out fine as well, we sent three boxes sized 1' x 1' x 1.5' and the total came to some $120. However, we were in no rush, so we used ground shipping and the boxes took about six weeks to arrive. Also undamaged. Good luck with your move! Dana
Thanks, Dana -- very helpful info! I may just send a box or two ahead, and keep in mind that I might get to Prague before it does. Having to leave things behind is difficult. :cry: However, as my husband is fond of asking, "How many pairs of black high heels do you really need?" (Answer: One pair more than I currently own.)
