Hi All, As from July I'll be working and living in Brno. I am looking for people who can show me around town, point me to fun pubs, goods food and places of interest. Also I'd like to know since I am still searching for an apartment/house which area's in Brno are good to live in (and which not!) but are still close to the city center. Hey, It's quite likely that I'll be in Brno for about a month starting around July 20. I hope to attend a summer school at the Masaryk University. I don't think they're going to sell you beer in pints in Brno, but a půllitr or three would be an option Henrik
:lol: So I won't ask for a pint then... In fact I have to start from scratch learning Czech. I seams like quite a difficult language since it has no link to German/Roman languages. When I will be there, quite honestly I do not know yet, probably flying in and out during July & August, in the mean time trying to work and find a place to live and make some new friends, busy bee. It's not the easiest one, true, but still manageable You'll find lots of useful stuff on these message boards if you look around. They call it the Summer School of Slavonic Studies. Basically it's a one month language and culture course that includes language classes, tours and other events. I think if you've started learning Czech, it might be a good idea for you to think about it as well There is some information here. See under "2) Summer school of Slavonic (Czech) Studies". Actually, that isn't altogether true. There are clear links with the romance languages in the grammar, and shared vocab. with the German family. If you've ever tried learning something really alien, you'll have noticed how close to home Czech is. Not that this is to deny what a @#$%^!! difficult language Czech is!
I made a semester at the faculty of philosophy... now is it good or bad...? first of all everything depends on the teacher. I had a two-week intensive course in sept. and the teacher was young dynamic and flexible (also cute which is always nice for the eye) and everything went fine. I made the same program in feb. and the teacher was around 60, reading the book and you had the strange feeling that you were back in grey Czechoslovakia... Then what do you want to learn? At the university you will learn to speak about the Czech Food, the Czech Food again, your family and what you have done during the week-end. If you wish to speak practical czech for business or even colloquial purposes, just forget about it! Some friends made the summer course were total beginners and told me it was good but very very intensive. As far as I have seen, the 2-week program that I made two times as gone which is a shame... For the flats, if you want to enjoy Brno's nights try to live in the centre "Stred" or in Veveri. If you look for a quiter place choose Masarykova Cvrt and Zabovresky. Cerna Pole is ok too. Besides these districts most of the buildings are panelaks (collective buildings) and far from the city. Remember you can't drive even after one drink. I can give you the contact of someone I'm working with at Gaute Agency, who speaks english. I work in the real estate business and I have never see as many stupid/incompetent/only-czech speakers than in Brno. And don't waste your time writting to one of these agency, they will never reply... You can find a decent place in the centre for 200-300 euros/month.
I now know what you mean about the 'general' real estate agencies reply time....... However I also found a real good one. But I am still wondering around. I am visiting Brno next week and have made time to view any apartments. So if you can send an overview of your apartments for rent; I'll be much obliged. Thanks in advance!
Hi, I've found an aparment and in the end it wasn't so hard really. Just get over the frustration of the on repliants and work with the good ones. the next challenge is the car and the bike, but that's for when I am there on a more permantent base as from mid August.
