Czech characters on the keyboard

Discussion in 'Grammar & Pronunciation' started by Tomas_Skuhravy, Aug 4, 2005.

  1. Does anybody know whether it's possible to type letters with hacek or other special Czech characters when they are not available on the keyboard? I mean, is there some combination of other keys which can be used for the purpose or are we compelled to copy and paste those characters each time we need them?

    There are workable instructions here:
    http://www.bohemica.com/index.php?m=catalog&s=78

I have this keyboard software installed on both my computers. The characters are all there, but it's tricky to find them without labels for the keys. I do all my Czech language homework on the computer and am trying to learn to touch-type all of it. I've thought that it might be a good idea to bring a real Czech keyboard home with me from CZ, but I really don't want to depend on the labels.

It's not possible to write Czech accented characters by using 'keychords'.

If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, there is Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator. This allows you to modify or create keyboards. E.g I use my normal UK keyboard, but for Czech characters I use Alt Gr + s for š, Alt Gr + z for ž etc. It is much easier than using the Czech keyboard that comes with Windows. For more details on MSKLC see this page. You will also need the instructions from Bohemica.com (see previous post) to install the new/modified keyboard.
