When I was little my dad made me learn this little song. I am curious to what it means (if anything) and what the correct spelling is. If anyone has any idea, I would be grateful for any information. Thank you so much!

Please bear with me, I am just going to type it out how it sounds, because I do not know the correct spelling, punctuation, or meaning!

    Chikory-chick
    Cho-la, cho-la
    Chika-aronica, annica-bannica
    molica, walica
    Can't you see?
    chikory czech is me!

By the way, I am new to this board - hello!

    Hello - Thanks for responding!

I know it would be wonderful if someone had the answer because I have been wondering for YEARS what it means, and I would love to get it printed and framed, with the correct spelling and meaning, for my dad for his birthday which is in April.

We just have to wait and see if someone appears with the answer! :D

Welcome to the boards Bry! I'm sorry but I have no idea what to tell you about the song. It doesn't seem to have any particular meaning - just playful little words that rhyme. Does anyone have any idea?

You are more bothered than me, since I only have your problem since an hour! Maybe you're more used to not knowing than I do, but I'm sure it's not nice!

Look I'm singing it now

Well, If even Dana doesn't know, we'll have to give a round of applause tho the first one with the answer!!!

Please help me too with your answer, future solver of this growing mistery :p

    Well...

I became curious myself and decided to do a little investigating.

I found a post on one site from someone who said they learned the song as a child and thought that it was Cajun. They were not sure of the spelling but typed it out as:

    Chickory Chick
    Cha-La Cha-La
    Checkela Rum
    In a Bannanna-ka
    Polli-ka Wolla
    Can't you see
    Chickory Chick It's Me!

I do not know the origin of it, but I discovered that you can hear the Three Stooges sing it! :D

Click on the link below and it's the first song listed in the right box.

    Enjoy!

Wow, good detective work Jeff! If it's Cajun, that explains why it didn't mean anything to me.

Jeff, I think you've earned the applause!!!

That was nice, a solution within such a short time :)

Stan and Laurel are also having fun with the song!

Jeff, this is very interesting! So it's song about a chicken! Oh my gosh how funny!

So I guess somewhere down the line someone in my crazy family changed the line from "Chickory Chick" to "Chikory Czech!"

How great to hear that sound clip, because the chorus is sung exactly how it was taught to me.

Thanks everyone for their input, this was fun!

Wow, I can't believe it -- I can actually (finally!) contribute something to this wonderful discussion board. :D Even if it isn't exactly Czech-related...

I am sitting here looking at the sheet music for this song. It was published in 1945 and is simply a goofy song that is fun to sing -- not Cajun, just a novelty song of made-up words that rhyme. (Lyrics by Sylvia Dee and music by Sidney Lippman.)

Here are the words (including verse) straight from the chicken's mouth!

Once there lived a chicken who would say Chick-Chick all day.
Soon that chick got sick and tired of just Chick-Chick, so one morning he started to say:

    Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la, check-a-la romey in a bananika,
    Bollika wollika can't you see,
    Chickery Chick is me.
    (Repeat the chorus once)

Every time you're sick and tired of just the same old thing,
Saying just he same old words all day,
Be just like the chicken who found something new to sing.
Open up your mouth and start to say, Oh....
    (Chorus)

    **************

Great memories of my [long ago!] childhood. :D

    Susan
