What is the best way to get from Detroit, MI (USA) to Prague, Czech Republic? Then I need a ticket back from Prague to Detroit, or I might go to Barcelona after Prague, so I might need one from Barcelona to Detroit. Either way, what is the best way to get to Prague and then back home? Through London maybe? And then take a cheap European airline like Ryanair or Jet2 or whatever? Thanks for any advice!

Does Luftansa fly out of Detroit? If so, it'll stop over in Frankfurt, but it's only a bit over an hour away from there.

We flew Chicago to Frankfurt to Prague. I've seen flights on Expedia going through London, The Netherlands, Munich, Frankfort - almost anywhere other than a direct flight.

Enjoy, I wish I was headed back!

I'm planning on being in Prague for a week in September with a tour group.

I've been checking flights and it seems that flights from Detroit to Frankfurt are the cheapest, as of this date at about $300-400 less than flying into Prague.

I've never been to Europe before and I'm wondering would it be worth my while to fly into Frankfurt and take a train to Prague, worth my while expense-wise, time-wise, hassle-wise, etc. Or should I bite the bullet and fly into Prague?

Needless to say, money is an issue and saving a couple hundred would be more than nice. OTOH, the way my luck goes I'd get on the wrong train and end up who knows where, with but a smattering of poorly-pronounced Czech ("Take me to your strudel!") and a SpongeBob suitcase....

Thanks for any ideas and suggestions you can give!

I got a really good deal on a flight from Detroit to Frankfurt on Northwest, then a hop to Prague on CSA. Total was around $650.

Only a few flights go directly from the US to Prague it seems, and I think all of those originate in NYC, so you'd need to get to NYC, then catch the flight to Prague. Not impossible, but more expensive than stopping in Frankfurt, typically.

I fly to Prague from Detroit at least once a year and in the past couple of years, I found the cheapest airfares with NWA (via Amsterdam). But it really depends...Lufthansa (Prague through Frankfurt) used to have good student offers but would consider students only up to the age of 28. The last time I flew home was last June and I could not find a good deal anywhere. Regardless what routes I checked, they were all ridiculously expensive so I ended up buying a ticket to London, which was by far the cheapest (after checking flights to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and a few other places-- I did a pretty thorough search...). I then bought a separate ticket from London to Prague on easyjet.com. There are many flights from London to Prague per day and they are cheap so this turned out to be the best option except for the hassle of a long wait and getting from Heathrow to Stanstead airport. I would recommend flying to another city only if the price to Prague is way too high (i.e. over $1000). As for direct flights to Prague, there are not too many but I think that besides NY, there is also one from Toronto and now Atlanta. Final recommendation: besides checking expedia.com, kayak.com, orbitz and other major sites, I ocassionally found a good deal to Prague on the less commonly known www.vacations-a-la-carte.com
