How would you translate the word upset in the following contexts: 'It upsets me when you ignore my calls' 'I'm upset that you didn't tell me the truth earlier' 'She was really upset when her cat died' Thanks
Well, I think, how to translate "upset" depends on degree of intensity of feelings. zneklidněný - unsettled rozrušený - disturbed rozčilený - angry
I know this isn't my post, but I'm also a bit curious. To me, upset means that I have a combination of two feelings: anger and hurt. When I use "upset" the hurt outweighs the anger, but the anger is still there. Is there a word to describe that?
Very likely I am wrong in understanding of meaning of "upset". But on this page the word is defined as: If you feel upset, you are sad, worried or angry about something. It's obvious, that if you are angry, you are in bad mood. But I think there is no Czech word for combination of "angry" and "hurt". I guess, you have to say - Jsem rozčílená a cítím se ublíženě. It seems, that Czech language in some measure differs physical and emotional hurt, although there is similarity: ublížit si (physical) / cítit se ublíženě (emotional) But this is evidently quiestion for local language experts wer and Eleshar
This is a very good definition of the word upset. If I am only angry, I use the word angry. But when I use the word upset, it means I am both angry and emotionally hurt/sad. I think that is how most people here use the word, but it could just be a personal preference.
I would put it in conversational mode as follows: Stve me to kdyz si nevimas m telefonatu. Jsem rozcileny (rozcilena), zes mi minule lhal (lhala). Velice ji vadilo kdyz ji umrela kocka or Byla velice vzrusena kdyz ji umrela kocka or Kdyz ji umrela kocka, tak z toho byla cela pryc. ... just another slant ...
I´d say, that it is impossible to translate upset as "rozrušený, zneklidněný or even vzrušený" in this case. If my cat died, I´d feel devastated! Anyways, as equivalent of "upset" in the case of dead cat I´d say - nešťastný/á. So the translation would be: Byla velmi nešťastná, když její kočka umřela.
Thanks for all your help. There's obviously not one word which neatly covers all the nuances of the word upset.
