I like the law about not watering down the drinks over there, some American restaurants are very bad about doing that in their soda machines!

In the U.S., they're also using corn syrup, fructose, etc, so the ingredient list doesn't show "sugar" until further down the list. Have the Czechs picked up on this American practice of disguising how much sugar is added?

Eso...I appreciate you bringing that up, but I hardly think the Americans are "disguising" how much sugar is added, the FDA here regulates the ingredient listings in order on the label according to quanity of each ingredient. If Fructose or Sucrose are listed much lower on the list then they are in lower propotions to the above listed ingredients. As consumers we Americans should know that if they don't already!

I'm afraid, that diet value of food still isn't so much important for Czechs customers.

After 5 knedliks with pork, 2 beers and some cakes with whipped cream isn't bottle of cola big deal ;)

Yes, I believe our American population has gotten more diligent (at least I hope we have) in eating smaller quanitities and reading labels before purchasing items. I for one read all labels on food so I know how many calories and carbohydrates are inside. Crucial when you are a diabetic on isulin. I am a little concerned about acquiring vegetables and fruit to supplement my diet while over there and at a camp outside possibly in the mts. I have to have low fat, no sugar, lean meats only, very little potatoes, nothing fried, etc. (In a perfect world according to my RN Dietician)! :)

My point was that back a few years ago, you looked for where "sugar" appeared in the list of ingredients. Now, however, the same product may have sugar listed in several places on the same label, such that instead of "sugar" appearing say 2nd in the list, rather you have as the 4th ingredient "high-fructose corn syrup", as 5th ingredient, "glucose," as so on. In short, they are splitting the added sugar into several different ingredients to make it so these sugary ingredients appear further down the ingredient list, and it appears there is less added sugar. Yes, people should know better than to be fooled by such, and in particular look at the total grams (yes, we actually do used grams sometimes in the U.S.) of sugar in the nutrition table. But many people don't look closely at this.

I don't know much about being diebetic, but is there some sort of replacement bar or supplements you can bring with you if need be?

You should be able to find all the fresh vegetables and fruit you need at Tesco in Prague.
