This is that very pretty song that you heard in the pub. I listened to it numerous times trying to get words...fortunately they are singing slowly. The english translation you sent does not match up perfectly. My translation....I was working phonetically....so I am sure al lot of what I wrote does not make sense....not words I recognize. But I thinnk I captured most of the song. Very nice. ............... You are troubled in vain My dear sonny I don´t care for you in my heart In my heart And I won´t be yours Even for an hour What are you thinking about My dear lass For your are my heart My bonny heart And you have to be mine Or you´ll be given to me by Lord Darmo se ty trápíš můj milý synečku nenosím já tebe nenosím srdečku Přece tvoje nebudu ani jednu hodinu copak si myslíš má milá panenko vždyt je to moje rozbilé srdenku a ty musíš býti má lebo mi tě panbůh dál And I´ll make myself A little squirrel And I´ll jump far from you From the oak on the fir I won´t be yours though Even for an hour And I have at home Such an axe It will make fall down Both the oak and the fir And you have to be mine Or you´ll be given to me by Lord a já ze sebe dělám malu veveričku a já z tebe skončím z dubu a ličku přece tvoje nebudu ani jednu hodinu a já chovám doma taku sekerečku ona me podetne dubek y lečku a ty přece budeš má lebo mi tě panbůh dá And I´ll make myself that big crow And I will fly from you For all the people on Earth I won´t be yours though Even for an hour And there are Such a star-gazers at my home They can count All the stars in the sky And you have to be mine Or you´ll be given to me by Lord a já z sebe dělám tu veliku vranu a já ti u letím na u herzku stranu přece tvoje nebudu ani jednu hodinu a su u na doba takové hvězdaři sobi počítaju hvězdyčky na a ty musíš býti má lebo mi tě panbůh dá a ty musíš býti má lebo mi tě panbůh dá
You got it almost right. a ty musíš býti má lebo mi tě pánbůh dá I think lebo is rather neboť/protože (because) than nebo (or). a já ti uletím na uherskú stranu And I will fly from you to the Hungarian side (of the river) (hmm, I realized that there is no river which would separate Moravia and Hungaria)
Ah thank you so much for the literal translation! My Czech teacher says it's no good for me because they have such specific accents.. but I think that's nonsense, it takes at least 5 to 10 years of learning the language before your accent is anything other than the accent of your first language. what differences does it make if I say tvoje or tvoja.. I'll still sound foreign!
Definitely! Apparently, even the Czech natives, including the members of Čechomor, have problems to understand the lyrics. The original line is: lebo mi tě pán búh dál for the Lord has given you to me Another confusion among natives: Copak sobě myslíš What do you fancy/want (literally: what do you intend for yourself) Perhaps side of the river, but not necessarily. In older Czech, the idiomatic meaning of “na uherskou stranu” was “to the east” or “far away (to the east)”. There is! And a big one, it is called “Morava”. (Consider Slovakia was a part of the Kingdom of Hungary and it was called “Upper Hungary”). But again, it needn’t refer to the river. It could refer even to the mount of Velká Javořina which was mentioned recently on this forum.
Copak sobě myslíš...that's what I heard, but I wasn't sure that it fit.. nebot'....that works better...nebot' mi tě pán bůh dál. Also....that last verse A jsou u nás doma takovi hvězdaři sobě počítaču hvězdíčky na nebi and this line a já sa udělám tu veliku vranu the singers seem to use 'sa' instead of 'se' for the reflexive pronoun. That's probably what your teacher didn't want you to get confused by.
Here's the 'official' English translation as it appears on their CD, Čechomor Proměny Tour 2003/Czechmor Transformations Tour 2003. Transformations Don’t fool yourself That I hold you in my heart I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour. Whatever are you thinking of You are my heart’s delight And I know God will make you mine. I’ll turn you into a little squirrel And leap from an oak onto a fir tree I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour. But I’ve got an axe at home And it’ll chop down the oak and the fir tree And I know God will make you mine. I’ll turn myself into a little fish And swim away from you down the Danube I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour. But I’ve a fishing rod at home That will catch any fish I want And I know God will make you mine. I’ll turn into a great big crow And fly over the river to Hungary I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour. And I’ve got an old-fashioned crossbow at home That can shoot down any crow And I know God will make you mine. I’ll turn myself into a star in the sky And shine on the earth for people I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour. And we’ve got astrologers at home That can count the stars in the sky And I know God will make you mine.
Sorry. It's actually: I’ll turn into a little squirrel And leap from an oak onto a fir tree I’ll never be your lover, not even for an hour.
Something is wrong with the SW. I also encoutered the same error (2 duplicated posts, the second one is in the"quote" form).
