I have been happily drinking Staropramen beer in Santa Fe since "the curtain fell". I believe it to be the BEST beer in the world! I am now told that the distributing company, National Distributing Company, has decided to no longer carry it. As far as I know there is no other distributing company in New Mexico handling this product. So I am just supposed to stop drinking it, forever? That seems a little extreme in a capitalistic country. I have money. I want to buy this beer. Why can't I?

If anyone knows where I can get it in NM, please let me know. Otherwise, I would ask everybody to call/write/contact the distributing companies for imported beers to demand to have this product carried. Phone number for NDC is 505-345-4492 or (800) 354-3526. Grant is the name given me for the beer manager.

    THANK YOU

I bought a bottle of lager simply named 'Czech lager' and the guy in the shop said it came from the Staropramen brewery - they made it. They sell Staropramen in the pubs in my town in the UK and it is great stuff, but I have to say this stuff I tried supposedly brewed by them gave me a real bad head the next day!! I think the name 'fireborne' of something like that is on the label.

Staropramen never gave me a headache and I am very sensitive to that. In fact that is one of the reasons, besides taste, that I like Staropramen so much. I suspect what you had was not the same Staropramen that I had been drinking. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to buy Staropramen in New Mexico. If anybody is able to get it, please let me know. I might be able to encourage your distributor to sell it here.

    Thanks

I don't think it was actually THE Staropramen I had, I have drank the real thing in the bars in town. This, what I bought was simply a bottled lager with 'Czech Lager' on the bottle. What was inside was a completely different drink! Staropramen itself doesn't give me headaches, but whatever was in the bottle I bought did

What I'll do later is pop down the off licence and buy another bottle, and post the details here. On the label it says the name of the brewery, which doesn't, if I remember match with the location of Staropramen's brewery. Possibly the guy in the shop was talking nonsense - he was just trying to sell this beer. I had mentioned I had tried Staropramen, and wanted to see if there were any more Czech beers about locally. He informed me this bottled stuff WAS Staropramen, brewed by them. He is maybe telling the truth, but most likely he is talking rubbish..... whatever, the darn drink gave me a rotten head for days! (and stomach!)

Note - My worst headache was Fosters!! I normally drink Stella, but this bar at a concert I went to didn't sell it so I had to drink Fosters. It made me feel like poo, and I felt woozy after 2 halves, so I chose Kronenberg for my third half. Big mistake, it just added insult to injury, and I had one thumping head when I got home...

Worst headache though was some German lager I had from an international food fayre's market stall!! To describe that after I had only got through half of the first half, lets say I stood up to give my seat to someone elderly, and felt like I'd drank gallons - I felt really faint, and nearly fell in the river! (I had taken a walk through a quiet riverside walk to 'sober up' after my quarter pint!)  I felt so unladylike and embarrassed - I can drink Stella till it comes out my ears and not feel in the slightest bit drunk.

To add to above, I just bought another one of those lagers.

It says on the label it is imported by a company called Firebrand in the UK, it is brewed by Pivovar Branik. Sorry about the lack of proper characters! Got to get my keyboard sorted!!

Can you get Czechvar in New Mexico? Czechvar is in fact Budvar (the real name can't be used in the U.S. because of the American Budweiser) and is available in stores in California. I wonder what you'd think about it.

    Greetings to beautiful Santa Fe!

Budvar is being sold in Waitrose in the UK, just spotted it in their drinks mag! That's one outlet in the UK.

eeek! Staropramen in the US doesn't taste (to me) anything like that in Prague. I am a Czech beer addict, so tried a few when I was in California last year to see if it was any better than it is in Britain. Obviously Czech beer doesn't travel; it was as shoddy as draft Czech beers are in the UK. I stick to domestics!

staropramen simply doesnt taste the same within the czech republic as outside of the czech republic. we've got both the Cerny Staropramen and the regular svetly one here in Iceland and it's not nearly as good as the Staropramen you get in the good ol' CZ. Which is weird 'cause the Budvar and the Urquell here tastes the same, so does the Krusovice. I'm a Budvar or a Krusovice man when I'm here at home but when I'm in the CZ I stick to Kozel or my local Svijany...it's simply fantastic

Was this bought from Threshers by any chance? I've tried that stuff its bloody awful, my Czech girlfriend later informed me that all her male Czech friends won't drink beer from that Branik brewery as its about the worst in Prague. So it seems they've started shipping it over here as the Czech's won't drink it!

Well worth trying though is Tesco's own brand Czech beer called Vratislav which is a very reasonable ?0.99p a 500ml bottle and easily compares to the likes of Plzen and Budvar still not quite as nice as Staropramen though. They used to sell Kozel as well but have stopped now although I believe Weatherspoons pubs of all places stock Velkopopivicky Kozel.

I'm always on the look out for anywhere in the UK that sells Gambrinus or Krusovice but no luck so far.

I didn't actually buy it from Threshers. It came from a large off licence nearby, cannot remember a name offhand. I'll keep an eye open for the brands you are looking for.

Some of the smaller independent offies are a good bet, we have several nearby who get some pretty unusual stuff.
