I, too, often refer to America as "she" or "her". Perhaps some of it comes from hearing the refrain (usually sung by Kate Smith in my mind) from "God bless America" : ...stand beside her and guide her... or perhaps it is because we usually pair America with Liberty/Justice (whether completely true or not is a whole other debate) and we perceive them as women (Lady Liberty, Justice as a blindfolded woman holding scales). America is far from perfect but, I am active in both political and social arenas trying to make it better.
Of course, in wartime, it's always "Uncle Sam" who wants you. (I thought that especially fitting giving the thread title).
Great job Glenn, it is our duty as citizens to stay active in those areas for that very reason. My husband and I are also very active. He has his own radio show. The new budding Sean Hannity! His website is http://www.dzuris.com. Although, I don't know on which side you are active so you might love him or hate him!  Then again, that's what makes America so great! Just keep in mind, as the bible puts it, love the people, even if you hate their ways.
Absolutely - for the record, I am just about a "yeller-dog democrat", one of those awful liberals you hear about, but I love my country and I know you do too. We both probably have very similar ultimate goals for the country - we just have some different ideas about how to get there. I don't believe all conservatives are "fascists" nor do I believe all liberals are "communists" - in the scope of global politics, both of us sit very close to the center.
I'm glad to hear you feel that way. Although we are very conservative, we have several liberal friends; which makes for very lively party conversations! We enjoy eachothers company and also enjoy a good debate now and then. It all boils down to the fact that we are all people and we don't all have to think alike to still like eachother.
What a touching harmony . No wonder, from the Czech (European) perspective both Democrats and Republicans are rightist. Therefore the radical statements like the Kevinvsn13’s make me always wonder. I can’t imagine living with such approach in the Europe with its (her? ) much wider political spectrum.
yes, exactly - we are not really so different over here. We try to make everything black and white when it is all just a muddled gray.
Yes, I just thought, that probably 90% Czechs (local bunch included) would be labelled as communists by "dzurisovak radio" And what about poor doman?
I seem to have no difficulty understanding what Kevin is talking about as in the western world Texas is about as far removed from Europe as it gets. I know I would not live there.
 well probably, not that I can speak for my husband, but i would guess it depends on whether or not those czechs enjoyed or simply endured communism. I know he would say that some are just "misguided". Not really communists but don't truely understand how their votes to take away freedoms are bringing us closer to communism. What about him? Poor him, he's stuck there like many czechs use to be. Perhaps he enjoys it, perhaps he endures it. But we don't agree with it -- simple as that. Oh, by the way, if anyone ever listened to Arnold Schwarzenegger, he said that he became a Republican because when he got to this country the democrates were saying the exact same things as those in the socialistic country from which he fled. So I guess Martin's not the only one to feel that way after fleeing socialism/communism.
Goodness, I hope I didn't loose all my online friends by sharing my husband's website. I'm still that same witty, charming, fun, & friendly person you've all been talking to for a year now!
Sure didn't loose me. BTW - I like your husband's T-shirt - I love hockey, have watched it here and in Prague.
Well, I think eso’s note refers rather to the current political preferencies than to the communistic era. What about doman? I have no clue of his political beliefs. The only I know is that the intricate history did make him to understand Czech. 8) Nothing but a terminological absurdity . We lived in a country which was called socialistic and were told that the country behind the barbed wire was capitalistic. For communists, the Arnie’s Austrian socialists were not real socialists but only some “progressive forcies” in the capitalistic world.
Well, in regards of the anti-Arnie mood in Austria not a long time ago, I have no problem to understand his motives to flee the country.
There is a difference between communism and socialism. No one said Austria was communist. To flee something means to run from it. It doesn't mean that he was held there against his will but just that he ran from it. Thanks for the explanation wer. A true peace maker - always find at least one thing you can agree with.
