Hello everybody, I just discovered this website. It looks like a very friendly community you've got going on here. I'm Czech, but I have been living in the States for almost 7 years now. I recently moved to New York and am just settling down, trying to become familiar with the city. You know, the usual stuff. I figured I'd register and introduce myself to you guys. Tomas

To Tomaash: Where did you reside before moving to NYC? You have probably found the Czech restaurants in Astoria, Queens. My grandpartents were Czechs and resided first in Manhattan, then Astoria Queens most of their lives. I live in New Jersey which has some Czechs in the Northern part, and many second generation children of Czech grandparents. Since we were a small ethnic group we intermarried with everyone else as long as they were Catholics. Modern generations have seen intermarriage with everyone else regardless of religion. In my office, I have four members of the staff that have some degree of Czech ancestry which is amazing as not many Czechs emigrated to the USA in 19th and 20th century. We are heavily outnumbered by our Slovak brothers in the Northeast region who also followed us for work and new life. You will find that Czech history in America is quite rich with some of the first settlers of New Amsterdam (now NYC) being Czech Protestants from Moravia who fled the religious wars of the Thrity Years War to Holland, and then to New York. Thereafter, Czechs have come here from various points in history, and spread throughout the country. Unfortunately some of our past relatives either dropped their Czech last names altogether or started to phonetically spell them. But we are here, and proud of our heritage and contribution to grand mosaic of America. You will find NYC quite exciting and cosmoplitan. Enjoy. I live about 45 miles outside of NYC, and only go to the city for special events like museums and plays. In the suburbs we have most of the same stores as the big city.
