I shall be travelling to Prague in May with a seniors study group and anticipate having to chat a bit with bus drivers and others as I rest up occasionally. How do I say " I taught English to adult migrants for 20 years"?
I have printed out all the Local Lingo pages for my group but find it hard to construct my own sentences.

    Hi Sybilla,

The translation of your sentence should be the following:

Ucila jsem anglictinu dospele pristehovalce 20 let

Unfortunately I can't type Czech diacritics but there's a hacek above C's in both "ucila" and "anglictinu" and one above P and E in "pristehovalce".
These marks strongly modify the pronunciation of letters so it's important to know where they are applied.

I guess someone could check my translation and rewrite it properly for you.

Here's a slight modification of the sentence:

"20 let jsem učila angličtinu pro dospělé přistěhovalce." (I taught English for adult migrants for 20 years)
"English for adult migrants" is the subject of your teaching here.

    Or:

"20 let jsem učila dospělé přistěhovalce angličtinu." (I taught English to adult migrant for 20 years.)
This means "I taught adult migrants to speak English".

Both versions work about equally well.
