Can it be used without having a special poppy seed grinder.
I want to make Makovy [poppy seed] kolache & I don't have a grinder & don't know to buy one.

I don't think so, other than to scatter on egg-washed bread rolls before baking, but I posted something about this a few weeks ago and was told that you can use the coffee grinder attachment of a mixer.

What you do is put poppy seed in pan with the milk and cook it for few minutes and then grind then in food processor or blender.Do not use too much milk just a little.

I just use old fashioned manual coffee grinder, works just fine and same as with “real” poppy seed grinder I always end it with grinding sugar to “clean” it. At least that’s what I remember my mom doing with hers so I do it too. :)
Powered coffee or spice grinder may work also, not sure, but I would worry it may dry out the poppy seeds.

I use my electric herb grinder, which is pretty much a coffee grinder.

What about the traditional way known even to small children?

    Tluču, tluču mák,
    ale nevím jak.
    Povězte mi panímámo,
    jak se tluče mák.
    Takhle takhle tak,
    tak se tluče mák.
    Na ty dobré koláče,
    které máma upeče.

In other words, you can use mortar.

If all else fails... use "Solo" brand canned poppy seed, found in the baking section of your grocery store.

I use it when I have little time... and guess what... Czechs I have fed my kolache have said, "This poppy seed filling is just like mom's!"

Just don't eat too much poppy seed. Even though they are dobrě, it will show up in a drug test. I have seen that happen before.

I have seen it in Mythbusters show. Even amount like this show up on a drug test:

Imagine what would regular portion of traditional czech "nudle s mákem" (pasta with poppy seed) do :):

You boil any pasta, and add grinded poppy seed and sugar :) as seen on picture above. As simple as that.

Besides poppy seed and sugar, do not forget to put some melted (unsalted) butter on your noodles (or linguini), otherwise you will choke on them  .
