Craft shops, fabric stores

Is anyone able to tell me where I can find a store that wöuld carry yarn and sewing supplies? :?:

 

Joann Fabric's in almost any large town in Michigan. :wink: Just kidding, but you might want to be more specific in your post.

Sorry I posted this on a site called my Czech Republic. I'm looking for a fabric store in Prague. I guess I didn't really understand that this was for a larger community of people.

So if anyone has a lead on where to get sewing supplies in Prague, it would be great!!!!

 

Mmm, that's a nice example of the attitude of some foreigners (and tourists in particular) who think that the Czech Republic is Prague and Prague is the Czech Republic. Well, (some) Praguers think the same. :wink:
By the way posting this question in the "Travel Tips" section seems to be a bit odd, it only added to the confusion about the place. I, for one, had no idea you meant Prague either.

And back to the topic, sorry I have no idea about the shops.

Try Tesco! Do You Know where in Prague I can buy hessian?

 

I recently returned from Prague. On Namesti Republiky at 8, directly across from the Palladium mall is a department store that has fabric and yarns on the top floor. Hope this helps.

 

It's called Kotva (anchor), which is advertising like mad to try to counter the competition from the new Palladium shopping centre. By yarn, do you mean cotton for sewing? Both Kotva, and Tesco at Narodni Trida, sell material, cottons for sewing, buttons and that sort of thing - what in England, we call haberdashery. (In Australia, rather bizarrely, they call it Manchester, presumably because the North West of England was the centre of cotton/textile production in the 19th century.)

If you need more specialist stuff, there are other shops but as I don't buy there, I'll have to think where I've seen them.

over here yarn is what you use to knit (sweaters, shawls, mittens, soft caps, etc.) - needle and thread is what you use to sew (stitch, hem, attach buttons, etc.).

 

Ah! Yarn = wool. That's ok because Kotva sells wool as well, as does Narodni Trida Tesco.

 

I've purchased yarn at both Kotva and Tesco and I can tell you that you'll find a much nicer selection at Kotva than Tesco. Tesco is okay for generic thread and sewing supplies, or if you're doing fine crochet work with cotton thread (the stuff you'd make doilies out of), but they don't have much else in the way of nice (or even sort of nice) yarn. I found Kotva's prices to be okay (compared to the US, anyway) and I definitely preferred them to the smaller Czech fabric/yarn shop I ventured into where the clerks were blatantly rude and completely uninterested in waiting on me.

Anyway, you'll find everything from bulky weight wools to gorgeous fingering silks at Kotva.
