So I was reading my travel book and it said when calling the U.S. 001+ area code minus the zero so how would you call Alaska (our area code is 907) from Prague?
I would recommend O2 Xcall; see http://www.cz.o2.com/soho/en/tarify_a_v ... xcall.html To call Alaska: 970-001-907-xxx-xxxx
+1-xxx-xxx-xxxx that is all I do too using my T-Mobile phone. T-Mobile has excellent coverage in CZ and a reasonable rate (.99 per minute). there are cheaper ways to go but, I like the convenience of using my own phone from back in the US - my friends in the US can call me without having to do any thing special and friends in CZ can send me cheap text messages and not incur international charges.
I have no idea what "minus the zero" means in that guidebook, but it's always just 001-areacode-number (the same 9 digits you'd dial back home). Or +1 instead of 001 from a mobile, no matter which operator.
I thought the "minus the zero" was for the UK. For example, a central London number from somewhere else in the UK might be 020 7222 3000 but to call it from abroad, you would dial 44 20 7222 3000.
Interesting. Few years ago we used to have number like 0608123456, that's what would you call when calling from Czech Republic. International call would be without the zero, thus +420-608123456. Later it got shortened to just 608431499 when calling from CZ.
If you read "minus the zero" as "minus the one" then it makes sense. You are already dialing 001, so the 1 before the area code, for example: 1(907)555-555 is not necessary. I've only called home once (it was on a cell-phone); basically just add two zeros in front of your usual long-distance number.
thanks for all of your help. it sounds like the same thing when i called from vietnam to here. we'll see how it goes!
+1 is international code for US and Canada. Then add the STD and local number. Most other countries have STD or area codes starting with a zero and it is for this reason that most advice on making international calls contain athe phrase "minus 0" or "drop the zero".
