Here is another song that I heard on a Žlutý pes CD. The lyrics are here. The youtube video is not very good (not Žlutý pes), but you can listen if you want. It wasn't too difficult to translate but I still don't understand a few words. So I hope someone will help! Žlutý Pes Zůstaň klidná (Stay calm) Když ti slunce svítí do očí, když ti štěstí jen málokdo zaručí, když jsi sama - prázdná a zlá zůstaň klidná, zůstaň klidná, zůstaň klidná a jdi spát já tě mám docela rád. When the sun shines in your eyes, when only a few people guarantee luck to you when you are alone, so empty and bad(?) stay calm, stay calm, stay calm and go to sleep I like you very much. Letní žár tě dál hladí po duši kapky deště jsou víc než mi přísluší vždyť to cos mi dala je všechno co mám a tak zůstaň klidná, zůstaň klidná zůstaň klidná a jdi spát já tě mám docela rád. The summer radiance gave you __________ rain drops are more than _______ to me After all, that which you gave me is all I have and so stay calm... Stay calm and go to sleep I like you very much. And so wait until the train toots in the distance dread in a dream that the wind no longer blows that you are not a queen of beauty I alone know best and so stay calm... KONEC/THE END
A Guess The summer radiance/heat gave you a caressing of the soul, drops of rain are more than suiting for me
Ahoj Davide, díky za vysvětlení. Myslím si, že máš pravdu. When I looked up přísluší a hladí, I couldn't find any suitable words, but... hledal jsem ve slovníku "fitting" a "caress" a našel jsem "příslušenství" a "hladit". Mimochodem, text písničky je "Letní žár tě dál hladí po duši" ale to zní jako "Letní žár tě dál hladí na duši" když poslouchám písničku. Zájimám se, která věta je správná?
dál (dále) = onward, forth, on (like in to go on, to keep on) dal = he gave hladit (imp.)/pohladit (perf.) někoho na/po něčem = to caress hladit (used in technology) = to polish, to smooth(en), to calender hladit po vlasech, hladit na duši Jistý český Rom pohladil Obamu po vlasech. Obama ho objal. Nyní žádá v Kanadě o asyl (ten Rom, ne Obama). Letní žár tě dál hladí na duši. = The summer heat continues in caressing your soul. (dál expresses continuing) The summer heat gave you a caressing of the soul. = Letní žár ti dal pohlazení na duši.
příslušet means in that context právem náležet = to appertain (by rights, by right of merit) drops of rain are more than what is appertaining to me (by right of merit) (kapky deště jsou víc než co mi náleží po právu = nezasloužil jsem si je, nejsem jich hoden, nemám na ně nárok/právo) slušet has different meaning: "Ta košile mi nesluší." (zákazník) "Sluší. Moc sluší." (vietnamský trhovec)
Díky za vysvětlení. Často si spletu o nějakých slovesech. Thanks for the explanation. I often get confused about certain verbs: hrát/hrál, stát/stál (minulý čas má čárku) ALE dát/dal, spát/spal, znát/znal (minulý čas nemá čárku) Užívá se taky "hladit na vlasech" a "hladit po duši"? Teď chápu (I get it) sloveso + dál = (continue + infinitive verb) OR (continue + present participle (-ing))
So, "kapky deště jsou víc než mi přísluší" = "nezasloužím si kapky deště" (I don't deserve rain drops). Is this more or less correct?
Thanks for all the explanations. I only have 2 questios left about this song: 1. když jsi sama - prázdná a zlá when you are alone, so empty and feeling bad(?) Is this correct? 2. ve snu se lekej, že vítr už nefouká dread (imperative) in a dream that the winter no longer blows Is this correct? Díky předem :!:
Alexx, thanks for the explanation. I get it: zlá = evil. Thanks to all who replied, I now understand the lyrics of Zůstaň klidná. 8)
hladit po duši - yes hladit na vlasech - rarely The preposition "po" implies that the move is unidirectional (in the right direction, of course). For example, you caress someone's hair from the roots, never from the free end. Never stroke the back of a cat against the hair. = Nikdy nehlaď kočku proti srsti.
More or less. But there is a difference. You can say: Nezasloužím si odměnu, pochvalu, tvou lásku, ... (positive things) Nezasloužím si pokutu, trest, tvou zlobu, ... (negative things) In "nezasloužím si kapky deště": it is not clear if the rain drops are a positive or negative phenomenon. In "kapky deště jsou víc než mi přísluší": the rain drops are explicitly a bonus.
To bibax: Thanks for the detailed explanation! In English I could say "rain drops are more that I could ask for" (to mean "rain drops are more than what appertains to me (by right or merit)" - and it denotes a positive phenomenon.
