Jiri Levicek Trio A MODERN DAY FUSION

Do be do be dooo be dooo be doobe dedoo...the beat repeats like a catchy tune in our mind. The scat like sounds resonate...again we hear the melody making us want to tap our feet to the walking bass line. Daaaa DA daaaa DA dadadaDA, syncopated rythm makes us add a clap to the mixture and pretty soon we are moving to the tunes of the young Czech composer/pianist Jiri Levicek.

The Czech trio’s repertoire is comprised largely of compositions written by Jiri Levicek himself, who graduated from the prestigious Janacek Music Academy in Brno with honors. He takes his influence from the music of multi-Grammy nominated saxophonist Bill Evans, jazz drummer Peter Erskine, and jazz pianists: McCoy (Alfred) Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, and Geri Allen.

This young musician created the Jazz ensemble Jiri Levicek Trio in 2003, focusing primarily on standard jazz compositions. The group performs regularly in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland and Germany. Levicek as well performs with the eight-member jazz band Samamba and the Blue Train Jazz Quintet writing and arranging pieces. Furthermore, he actively cooperates with the Brno musical theatres and creates compositions to accompany films.

The music is filled with jazz scales, repeating rhythms, a driving bass line, improvisations - each instrument creating its own voice and personality. The music is great to sit back, relax and enjoy, evoking a lounge type atmosphere. Some of the melodies are upbeat, with staccato rhythms, while another selection is reflective, presenting more of a mellow mood full of soul. Then the drums pick up again, and the piano keys start running with chords adding dynamic appeal and fingers traveling quickly across white keys, flats and sharps exquisitely placed in the rhythmic dialogue between the bass and drums. One can tell from listening to his music that Levicek can really feel the mood of the pieces he plays, for through his playing he brings the crescendos and decrescendos of everyday life to an audience.

Levicek has already competed in numerous international events and has won first place at the international contest in Brno, Czech Republic receiving the Leos Janacek’s Award in 2001. He as well has received awards for his performances of Mozart and Slovak composer Eugen Suchon.

The concert is in commemoration of International Roma Day and honors the closing of the Roma Rising Exhibition by talented photographer Chad Evans Wyatt. Join us for an unforgettable night of music and celebration! For reservations, please call 202/274-9100 x.3413. For additional questions, please call 202/274-9105.

The group will also perform at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) on April 9, 2006 at 12 noon at the Tidal Basin.
