If one were to move to the Czech Republic for retirement, jumping through the hoops involved with owning property and obtaining the relevant residence permits, how could one (of moderate US means) become vested in the Czech healthcare system?

From what I have found out:

    - if you get a permanent residence in CR, or become an employee of a company residing in CR, you get a so called "public health insurance". It is cheaper, covers more things and you can choose your insurance company. Plus, if you are an employee, your employer pays a part of it for you.

    - if you do not fulfill the conditions above, you can get a "contract insurance". This is either short-term (under a year) of long-term, costs more, covers less and you can only get it at VZP (Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna - General health insurance company).

I have tried to search the VZP web for details, but no success. Their page is terrible.

P.S. The minimal payment per month is (as far as I know) about a thousand CZK.

And, our Interior Ministry HIC seems to have much better info than the Health Ministry. We are building a police state here :))

Thank you for the information, Halef. This all seems possible if one is resourceful and is willing to deal with the bureaucracy involved.

Can anyone please recommend a health insurance company? My husband and I (both Czech residents) have VZP and are dissatisfied with them. Their customer service is bad, they don't answer the phones, and in general they seem like they couldn't care less whether or not they have us as their clients. Plus it's been hard for us to find doctors in Prague who accept VZP insurance. Is there a health insurance company that any of you would recommend?

    Thank you!

    Dana

    Dana,
We're both with OZP and have been for a couple of years, they seem to be fine. I've had loads of specialist treatment on my back with no trouble at all. I think their office is in Prague 4.

Thank you Sam and sorry for the late response. I went to the OZP site and they have a lot of info there, so I'll look through it. Greetings to Moravia! :)
