It has been understood that my family has come from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, later the area of Czechoslovakia.

My grandfather, who considers himself Hungarian(?), calls his father's birthplace "Kaschauer"

Is this name familiar with anyone in the Czech Republic or Slovakia?

    Could also be Kashau???

    German: Kaschau
    Hungarian: Kassa
    Polish: Koszyce
    Latin: Cassovia

the adjective derived from the name Košice:

    Slovak (Czech): Košický
    German: Kaschauer
    Hungarian: Kassai

    Latin: Cassoviensis

These adjective forms are common surnames as well, esp. in Slovak/Czech, German and Hungarian.
