I can't speak any Czech and I know only a few words and expression but I was trying to translate a short sentence into Czech: "I'm a little tired but I'm happy that you are here" Is it correct to say: "Jsem trochu unaveny ale jsi stastny (that??) jsi tady" I really don't know how to correctly translate the word "that" into Czech. Thank you for your help!
Dear Lorenzo, the word "that" in this sense is translated as "e", so that your sentence will be translated as "Jsem trochu unavený, ale jsem tastný, e jsi tady." [This message has been edited by Anke (edited May 03, 2002).]
The word "stastny/stastna" has a stronger meaning in Czech than the word "happy" has in English and the word is used noticeably less frequently in Czech than "happy" is used in English. "Happy" is more often translated as "rad/rada" ("glad"). E.g. "I'm happy that..." is mostly translated as "jsem rad/rada, ze..." or "mam radost, ze..." The sentence "I'm a little tired but I'm happy that you are here" would then be translated as "Jsem trochu unaveny, ale jsem rad (or "ale mam radost"), ze jsi tady." The version with "stastny" is not incorrect but fewer Czech native speakers would actually say it that way.
