I would like to cheer on my favorite women's basketball star in Czech...any suggestions? In English, I would say something like "way to go!" or "Let's go!", but I'm sure that the idioms are very different. Thanks! K [This message has been edited by kec (edited June 14, 2002).]
You can say "Do toho!" (go for it!), or "Nandej jim to!" (give it to them, show it to them). You can add her name at the beginning or end.
Dekuji, Dana! I am a beginner at learning Czech, so I didn't have the first clue about this. Let's see..."jim" I know means "them" and "to" means "it". I found a translation for "give!", dej. What does the "nan-" add to the meaning? Thanks again! I really enjoy this site. It is very helpful for the beginner, as well as fun. -Karen
It's hard to separate "nan" and "dat" and explain what meaning "nan" adds. As you correctly said, "dát" means "to give". The word "nandat" is a little bit expressive and means something like "to beat someone up".
That's great! Just the sort of undertone you want in that sentiment. ;o) So then, when she/the team make a great play, would I say "vyborne!"? Here in the U.S., we say "way to go!" or "nice hustle!" for a good play.
