    Hello dear friends,

Please help with the favor of this translation:

"...budete tedy bydlet ob jeden dum."

is it saying the next house over, or the house after the next house (as in, 2 houses over)?

    thank you

    Hi ondrejana,

the correct translation is the latter of your sugestions; "ob jeden dum" is like 'next but one house'...

    Just to clarify,

'Next but one' means 'two houses over' as you put it, Jana. The first phrase is not standard usage in English (American English, at least--perhaps the Brits use it), although I've heard my Russian wife use it all the time.

I think the "...but one" phrase is British. E.g. "last but one" = "the one before the last".
