Sorry to ask such a supposed simple question but though I have searched this and other websites, I have not found a table of conjugations for the verb 'to say' řikat > řici. Could someone fill me in on this. Thanks
Říkat is of model “dělat”: já říkám ty říkáš on/ona/ono říká my říkáme vy říkáte oni/ony/ona říkají Říci (říct) has no present forms, because it is perfective. The future forms: já řeknu ty řekneš on/ona/ono řekne my řekneme vy řeknete oni/ony/ona řeknou
Thank you so much Wer. I am giving my first czech speech (short one) to my czech language interest group and could not come up with this conjugation.
In fact it is more complicated. There are two verbs with nearly the same meaning: (1) říci and (2) -řknouti (the unprefixed infinitive *řeknouti is not in use). But some forms are either archaic or not used at all. říci (1st class): řku, řčeš, řče, řčeme, řčete, řkou; - archaic indicative present rci, rceme, rcete; - archaic imperative řka, řkouc, řkouce; řek, řekši, řekše; řekl, řekla, řeklo, řekli, řekly, řekla; (with prefix: vyřkl, nařkl, ...); řečen, řečena, řečeno, řečeni, řečeny, řečena; (with prefix: vyřčen, nařčen, ...); -řknouti (2nd class): řeknu (vyřknu, nařknu, ...), řekneš, řekne, řekneme, řeknete, řeknou; řekni (vyřkni, nařkni, ...), řekněme, řekněte; vyřknuv (nařknuv, ...), vyřknuvši, vyřknuvše; - only with prefix other forms are rarely used: e.g. uřknut; Now you are able (almost) to conjugate the verb říci, even with prefixes. 8) Doufám, že v tomto příspěvku Scrimshaw najde semtam nějakou perlu moudrosti. Dost jsem se snažil.
I do not think it is really relevant to mention the ancient conjugation. Concerning verb "-řknouti" it is no more in use without a prefix but there are many many verbs with this stem, whose conjugation is as mention but without the -e-! vyřknout: vyřknu (nařknu, uřknu,...) vyřkneš (nařkneš, uřkneš) vyřkne (nařkne, uřkne,...) vyřkneme (nařkneme, uřkneme,...) vyřknete (nařknete, uřknete,...) vyřknou (nařknou, uřknou,...) ------ vyřkl (nařkl, uřkl,...) The -e- was there only for better pronunciation (otherwise there would be three consonants in the syllable onset) but is not necessary for words with a prefix because the three consonants are not in one syllable. The same may occur (and occured regularly in past) with verb "číst" in its past tense: číst - Já jsem četl přečíst - Já jsem přečtl (syllabic division "přeč-tl", today it is almost always "přečetl") addendum: vyřknout - to utter nařknout - to accuse uřknout - to bewitch zařknout se - to swear, to obtest přiřknout - to assign, to attribute never occurs with: přeřeknout se - to make a slip of tongue odřeknout (or odříci) - to revoke prořeknout se - to say something unintended by mistake zříci se (zřeknout se) - to abandon a claim
To these last two replies, I can only thank you both and utter a very small-mouthed . . . . wow.
