Curious thing, Dvorak is pronounced as Dvorjak (j as in judge) in English. Is this how it is pronounced in Czech? If so, which letter causes this exactly? As far as I could find out 'r' is pronounced as a "deep r" and 'a' as 'a:'.

If a native speaker could comment on this, it'll be mostly appreciated!!

The main problem would be the letter ř (r with háček). Unless you are able to say it, you can't pronounce Dvořák properly :)

The "a" is indeed pronounced long, "a:".

You can listen to the pronounciation of some words with "ř" at

Just to clarify, the name of the composer is Antonín Dvořák. It is only spelled Dvorak in English where the Czech characters are dropped. Therefore the confusion.
