"On January 27, 1379
CHARLES IV of BOHEMIA EMPEROR and KING
Coming from SIENA headed for PISA
Presented himself with all his retinue at this gate;
With contempt towards the fiscal arrogance
With firmness defiant of the danger of the deed
... those of SCHARLINO didn't want to let him enter....
R. Sardo: Chronicle of Pisa"

I was mainly hoping that the English translation could make clear the term “fiscale arroganza”, but the translation “fiscal arrogance” is out of the frying pan into the fire. Out of spitefulness, one could translate it as “fiskální arogance”. Twisted Evil

So, is it clear in the original what exactly does the “fiscale arroganza” mean? Does it mean that Charles demanded crudely taxes from the city? Or that he refused to pay to the city for the right of passage?

For the first possibility, my loose translation would be:

Dne 27. ledna 1379
Karel IV. český, císař a král,

Sorry for the kidnapping of the thread into English. Embarassed

"Karel IV. ....Nedobré jméno měl i v italských městech.
