i heard from my newly emigrated relatives that they loved the sandwiches there, but they didn't have a top piece of bread to them, does anybody know the name to them they only know it in Czech, and does anyone know how to make them?

    Chlebíčky.

Dunno if you can have anything similar to the Czech "veka", which is the basic ingredient. But I think you can use baguette or toast bread instead. Then just cover it with anything you like.

One of basic "chlebíček"s is veka, butter, salami, pickled cucumber. Or veka, butter, ham, slice of egg, slice of pepper.

Usually, it is a slice of a hard-boiled egg, but there is a kind using egg salad (mix of diced hard-boiled eggs, diced onion, grated cheese, diced pickled cucumbers and mayo, mustard, salt and pepper added to taste) on sandwich bread topped with sliced ham or salami, sliced Swiss cheese and a slice of a tomato or cucumber. Gherkin would do, too.
The most popular kind of chlebicky has so-called vlašák (Italian salad, made of a mix of vegetables, diced ham, gherkins, onions and mayo) on white bread, topped with sliced ham, hard-boiled egg and a slice of green pepper and gherkin. However, home-made chlebicky can be made of whatever you want to or you can find in your fridge or pantry.

In English the right term is canape (open-faced sandwich). The basis is a small, about 1-inch thick slice of bread, spread with a sticky layer (potato salad, cream cheese etc.) onto which you arrange tiny pieces of garnish. You can use whatever is at hand (salami, ham, smoked salmon, a slice of egg, a slice of tomato or pickle, a bit of fresh parsley) - making sure that it looks good. You can use only one ingredient as long as you pile it high (for instance lobster meat mixed with mayo) garnished with a thin slice of lemon and a trickle of caviar. Don't use French bread as it would collapse under the weight of the garnishes.
