    Hi Everyone;

    I am really curious if Bruno is a common name. I think it’s Italian so I am wondering why my Grandfather who I believe was born in small town called Stadlo near Sternberk was named Bruno. Any ideas? Thanks.[/b]

    The statistics say
    Bruno = 969 in 5 010 025 czech first names
    Brůno = 4 in 5 010 025

    It is not a very common name 8)
    The reason for giving this name to a child may be family tradition and/or plenty of other reasons. The parents simply like it. They may admire some famous person with this name,...

    The day of Bruno in czech calendar is June 11th (so called "jmeniny")

    Bruno is of Germanic origin (= brown).
    The most famous Bruno was Giordano Bruno Nolanus, who was burned at the stake in Rome (do you remember his thesis: neither the Earth nor the Sun are a centre of the Universe).
    And Bruno Kreisky, an Austrian chancellor.
    And Don Bruno, an American gansta.

    The feminine form is Bruna or Brůna (common Czech surnames).

    As a common noun brůna means a (brown) horse/mare. It is also a traditional carnival mask.

    "Brůna je kůň, jehož základní barva srsti je bílá, avšak s krycí srstí barvy červené, hnědočervené až černé, brůny rodí se ryšavé, hnědé až tmavohnědé, jen brůna atlasová neboli bělouš rodí se špinavě bílá. Vybarvením nabývá pak brůna barvy sivé (sivka), černé nebo rudé (muchař), modravé (železná) a jablkové (plesnivec)." :shock:

    To translate this into English is a real nut. 8)
