Čapek's "lamentation"?

Discussion in 'Culture' started by pierre friedmann, Jan 9, 2010.

  1. Hello,

Does anybody happen to know of a poem (?) by Karel Čapek, perhaps with the title "Lamentation [for the Czech Republic?]? I'm trying to find the Czech original of a strange translation I found (translated, not more nor less, to Hebrew).

If I translate the beginning (of the translation...) to English, we get something like: "Oh Lord, / You who made this beautiful country, / Your eyes see our pain and our despair".

Please, if you know of the Czech original, or of an English translation, please let me know.

    Thank you!

That’s This Eve’s Prayer, an article published in Lidové noviny on September 22th, 1938. It’s Čapek’s reaction to the Munich events in 1938.

  3. Brilliant! Thanks! I knew it couldn't have been a poem.
