There's a lot of laughing during Nohavica's delivery, so that sparked my interest enough to try to translate it. I think it's lost in the translation because I don't really find it funny. Seems to me it's about a fat guy whose uncle tells him to diet, he does, gets skinny, and the Uncle says, yeah it's in the diet. hmm, please correct my translation so I can find out what's so funny. 8) Když byl Pepa ještě mladý - When John was still young nevěděl si s ničím rady. - He never saw anyone with whom he would be happy. Chlastal pivo, jedl ovar - He guzzled beer and ate broiled pork byl duševní polotovar. - He was mentally undone Na všechny se blbě tlemil – On all the stupid ??? a pak jednou přišel Emil. – and so one Emil came Vzal si Pepu pěkně stranou – He married to Pepa nice advice "Pepo nemáš na vybranou, - “Pepa, you don‘t have a choice“ podívej se do zrcadla – look in the mirror toho špeku toho sádla!" – it’s bacon, it’s fat“ Dále dodal tichým hlasem: Next he delivered with a quiet voice "Zaprvé je konec s masem" – “First is the end with meat.“ přidává hned druhou radu – He quickly added the second advice "Jestli nechceš zůstat vzadu, - “If you don’t want to get behind, jabko, rajče žitný klíček - apple, tomato, rye germs toť tvůj nový jídelníček! – That’s your new diet“ Pepovi jde hlava kolem – Pepa wrapped his head around it sedí za kuchyňským stolem. – He sat at the kitchen table Celý dům už dávno chrní - the whole house was ??? Pepa zkouší klíčit zrní.- Pepa tried to germinate the grains Sedí jako na jehličí – sit like on needles "Vyklíčí či nevyklíčí?" – sprout or don’t sprout Vyklíčilo,Pepa jásá - Sprouted, Pepa cheers a rovnou to zrní spásá. – and straight to the grain he saved K tomu rajče,sklenku mlíka – To the tomatoes, a glass of milk podívejte na Pepíka – look on Papa Je to Pepa nebo není – It is Pepa or it is not před očima se nám mění. - As before he looked to us Bavit se s ním ne ní hamba, - To enjoy with them not her ?? hlava Havla,tělo Ramba. – main head, body Ramba Strejda Emil kývá hlavou – Uncle Emil nods his head "A to vše tou zdravou stravou!" – “And its all your healthy diet”
LOL Some suggestions: Nevědět si s ničím rady - to be helpless, someone who does not know how to do anything Tlemit se - have funny-stupid face Vzít někoho stranou - to take someone on side for private talk špek - fat in this case dodat - add in this case chrnět - to sleep spásat - to eat (used for cows) hamba - shame
The corrected translation is comical... Pepovi jde hlava kolem – Pepa was flummoxed by it (lit. something like his head was turning round of it) probably we would say...It made Pepa's head spin Lot's of nice phrases in there Vzal si ho pěkně stranou podivej se, toho špek, toho sádla, místo hranolky, máš jíst travu Celý dům hlasitě chrní Sedíme jako na jehlíčí, co se stane? Před očima se nám mění, hlava Havla, tělo Ramba,, a to vše tím, že už nejí hranolky. Is there a link to hear the audio? Is it on you tube?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCVjIHa7734 But this is NOT original version from Jaromír Nohavica, this is some guy singing the song where original Nohavica's poem is used as lyrics. Not bad though.
I put mp3 from my archive with original version to uschovna.cz, but as I am not sure if admins are OK with posting such links, so I only sent PM to scrimshaw.
