Hi there guys,

I was reading a text and noticed that to express if it uses:

kdyz + future tense verb
verb-li

Maminka slibila, ze nam koupi darek, kdyz ji pomuzeme.

Maninka slibila, ze budu smet jit k babicce, pomohu-li ji nakupovat

Is there a particular reason to use one instead of the other?

Hi Kikko,

The construction with "-li" is quite old-fashioned and bookish. You will hardly ever hear it in colloquial speech but it is still used in formal/official documents, books and formal speech. If used, the verb itself will also be in its formal version, i.e. you should use "pomohu-li", not "pomůžu-li".
