Hi,
I am wondering if anyone knows of a Czech/Slovak community in Michigan. I am interested in meeting more people like me. I grew up in a very Czech household where we spoke only Czech. Sometimes my values do not mesh with those of other Americans. I wouldn't mind making friends like myself.

Hi Pavla,

I am interested to know where in Michigan you live and how long you have lived here. I'm afraid I won't be of much use to connect you to Czech culture here in Michigan, but I would still like to know you. You see my mother's parents came here about 100 years ago. I only experienced bits and pieces of Czech culture as I grew up, but now I am very interested in appreciating it better.

So, I live north of Grand Rapids and I have met one other person from the Czech R. who lives near Lake St. Clair.

Ahoj Adam,
Nedavno dodelal Phd v University of Michigan.

I have a very extensive database of Czech-Slovak organizations in the US, and the only listing I have for Michigan is the Sokol Detroit, located in Dearborn Heights. If you go to the main Sokol page at http://www.american-sokol.org, you can page through to the Northeastern District and find contact info for the Detroit chapter.

Hope that helps, even a little.... Smile

P.S. I just went to Mapquest and realized that Ann Arbor is practically next door to Dearborn Heights! The Sokol people are really friendly - I've not actually met any, but have corresponded with some - mostly second generation Czechs, but you'll find a few immigrants as well.

Good luck!
