Ahoj everyone, I wrote my friend in Prague a letter greeting him for Christmas. He speaks English well so he'll understand it, but I thought if anyone on here were bored, they might want to spend couple minutes correcting my Czech. Thanks: Ahoj Zdeneke Ják se máš? Mám se dobře. Doufám že jsi dobrý. a co tvůj dum, už jste dokončil předelávání? (How is your home? Have you finished remodeling?) Máš fotky? Myslím, že jsme nehorvořili o jeden rok. (I think we haven't spoken with each other for about 1 year). (My Czech is much better, but still I don't understand much spoken Czech.) A když mám dopis, mužu čist pomalu a vyhledat v knihy. Nevzím lekce z Lenky ted´protože jsem přiliš busy. (I don't take lessons from Lenka now because I'm too busy) Mám hodne práce a nemám moc čas. Ale jsem nekončila knihu Step by Step že koupiš mi (But i didn't finish reading the book Step by Step that you bought me) Protože tu kniha potřebuje učitelka tak to budu použivát když vezmu lekci znovu. (Because that book requires a teacher so I will use it when I take lessons again). Nebo možna když budu končit čist tu novou knihu, budu rozumít dost a mužu použivat Step by Step bez učitelky. (or maybe when I finish this new book I will understand enough to use Step by Step without a teacher). Kdy přijiš do Americe? (I'm sorry we couldn't see each other). (when you write me, please write in Czech so I can learn). Chybíš nám (We miss you!!!!) jses muj oblibený z Martinovy kamardi ale nikdy neříkej nikomu (You are my favorite of Martin's friends but don't tell anyone!) lol Kromě Martin, on už vi. (except Martin, he already knows) - sending smiles & hugs. Pekný Den Zdeneke a Vesely Vanoce!! Pozdravuj rodiče. Katka
few comments: *I think he is Zdeněk so it is Ahoj Zdeňku * in Czech letters we continue the sentence after the greeting (no capital letter there) * jsi dobrý (člověk) = you are good man, so better is "dobře daří" = going well (že se ti dobře daří) or "že se máš také dobře" * předelávání sounds odd, maybe "přestavba"= rebuild is better * můžu (CC) = mohu (LC) * tak ji čtu - I think it means you are learning using this book -> "tak se z ní učím" * think all mentioned books are learning texts so "učebnice" suits it better * sending smiles & hugs - posílám úsměvy a polibky (too much affectionate for Czech) *Jseš (CC) - Jsi (LC) Ahoj Zdeňku, jak se máš? Kdy přijedeš do Ameriky? Pěkný den Zdeňku a veselé Vánoce!! Pozdravuj rodiče. Katka
Katko, we americans make the same mistakes. What you said is exactly how I would have tried to say it. But, if you will humor me, and allow a non czech speaker to make some comments...which I agree is totally inappropriate, but can't stop myself. Ahoj Zdeneke...Zdenku...dissapearing 'e' Ják se máš? That was really helpful for me! For instance : I didn't know that že couldn't be used as a pronoun. I must attempt something as long and as brave as this letter was so maybe you can help me in the same way if you have the time and the patience!
Be careful Čtyři, don't trust my corrections. I don't want to lead you astray. I'm sure I made mistakes too.
Katka, very good, despite of many mistakes I get what you wrote exactly when comparing with your english translation. I guess when you will send it the way you wrote it (maybe with some improvements from David), it would be more genuine than if it is 100% correct. David, good points. You are getting yourself from the role of the student to the role of the tutor ;-), Karel must be proud of you (in fact all we are ).
Hey Alexxi, thanks for that. Encouraging. But I reallyh should leave the correcting to you guys. I reread my post and I see I offered Katka some bad advice. Blind leading the blind. Slepý se snaží vést slepou z skály.
No offense taken I completely agree. By the way, I know you are learning spanish. Similar expression in spanish.
scrimshaw, Are you multilingual like Alexx and I? I have a good knowledge of Spanish, know French quite well, and then I am trying to learn (time permitting) Czech, German, Italian and Portuguese. Someday I'd like to review Modern Greek (which I learned), Latin, and a couple others... but so far, there is not enough time in one day to do all that  Saber espaňol es muy útil cuando se vive en Florida, no crees? Knowing Spanish is very useful when one lives in Florida, don't you think? -René
I am really impressed by all these multilinguists. Even in Latin!! Někteří na foru dokonce i žijí v Romanské Říši. To je rozhodně působivé. No, René, I do not know a lot of languages. I have a little highschool spanish, mostly forgotten. But you are right, knowing spanish is useful in Fl. A long while back I visited Calle ocho in Miami. English was not spoken, not a melting pot. Cuban enclave. May have changed by now.
Don't feel bad, knowing Czech and some Spanish makes you a multilinguist. Long time ago I learned some Latin, but my Latin is not as good as Bibax's :!: Trochu rozumím ale neumím psát. Jenom španělsky You are right, in Miami's Calle Ocho (Eighth Street) English is not spoken at all. Only Spanish.
Of course, I have a few languages too. English, Spanish, American Sign Language, some Czech  , can read and understand most Italian, French and German, have a basic knowledge of Russian, Chinese, and Romanian, and am currently learning some basic Indonesian. Oh, also dabbled in Japanese and a few others but am not very fluent.
Glenn, that is very good! I speak fluent Spanish, understand French quite well, have a basic knowledge of German, Italian and Portuguese. I am now learning Czech, understand a little Russian, Bulgarian and Greek. And I dabbled in Latin and Japanese too (nihon-go-mo sukoshi hanashimasu) When I went to Prague last month I asked my Czech friend if he understood Polish and he said no. Well... later I joined a tour group in Karlstejn (most in the group were Polish): I was able to understand some of their conversations!
