Opera's foxiest lady
is coming to Los Angeles this January courtesy of Long
Beach Opera. In one of the 20th century's most imaginative
excursions into fantasy, Czech composer Leoš Janáček's
1924 opera, The Cunning Little Vixen, combines song, dance,
and music into a seamless reflection on the cycle of life
and death. A newspaper comic strip about the adventures
of a fox living in a world populated by humans inspired
Janáček to create this Czech Midsummer Night’s Dream. In
his inventive opera, foxes, birds, insects and even a badger
interact with a local farmer, forester, innkeeper, schoolmaster
and priest. Ani Maldjian (LBO’s acclaimed Anne in The Diary
of Anne Frank) will star as the Vixen. Michael Chioldi
will be the Forester. Ken Cazan, internationally known
for his imaginative and innovative stagings, will direct
in his company debut. Sung in English with English Supertitles.

into an attraction that draws thousands of people each

The Kolache Festival
is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage...
a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized
their precious identity was slipping away. New generations
knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors.
Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share
the history...to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent,
and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival
and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique
of stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting,
woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka, and
sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food
and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural
heritage.
