We've
been going through a freezing spell for almost two weeks, with
temperatures often staying below zero 24 hours a day. Some
areas of the Czech Republic have registered temps around
-20°C (-4°F). Elevations above 300 meters (1000
feet) have had a continuous layer of snow for at least
a month, so we
can't complain of a lack of snow this winter.
The trip between Prague and Olomouc now takes under 2.5
hours on the new Pendolino train. It is at least 30
minutes less than the average train travel time. Traveling
between
both cities is a breeze - when the train actually runs. Four
out of five Pendolino trains were returned to the Italian
manufacturer for repair only one month after they were introduced
on December
11. The repaired trains should be back on the tracks on February
1. As a form of apology, Czech Railways has lowered the fare
by 20%, so it is now a good time to try out the Pendolino.
Too bad there's only one running...
The 13th edition of the Days
of European Film festival, which presents contemporary
European films, runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5 in Prague and
Feb. 6 to 14 in Brno. Last year the festival was visited
by over 20,000 people.
