Can anyone offer any advice regarding a cycling holiday in Czech Republic? I have masses of cycling experience including cycling holidays in Spain, Turkey and France. What are the roads like? Are there any good quiet lane networks? Are any areas particularly good? Is accommodation likely to be a problem?

Are you looking for on-road or off-road cycling? The Czech Republic has an extensive network of unpaved bicycle trails, if off-roading is your thing.

I am still doing research on this myself so can't help you out in that area too much. But I am planning on doing some cycling there in July and am looking for cycling partners. Are you going to be cycling in July and would you want to possibly do some cycling together?

don't know if you have run across this site in your research, but it seems to have a good grasp of the cycling routes

Predominantly on-road - I ride a road bike. How rough are the unpaved trails?

Some of the trails I've seen are navigable on a road bike; however, I've seen some mostly smooth trails, which have a rough section or two in them. I think it depends largely on where you're biking. The most fun trails definitely require a mountain bike (speaking as one partial to hills and bumps)!

I haven't had much experience with on-road biking in the Czech Republic. My general impression from riding them is that typically they are in good repair, although in some places, especially the less-travelled two-lanes roads, they are a bit narrow with no shoulder to bike on, so you may end up biking in the lane of traffic. Perhaps, though, this will not bother you.

I rode from Telc to Cesky Krumlov last fall (over the course of 3 days, not all at once) and was on a variety of roads. Sometimes I was sharing the road with very light traffic, usually on pavement (what we would call "blacktop" here), and occasionally gravel or hard-packed dirt with a gravel base.

Several times my route took me along lakes or ponds, for long stretches through forested areas, and a couple of times I was even on a two-lane tractor path between farm fields! Overall, however, the roads and trails were easy to maneuver on a hybrid (mountain/road) bike, and I don't consider myself a "real" biker. :)
