This is our first trip to your country. We would like to bring a gift from the USA to a friend that lives in Prague. Can you help us by suggesting things that are hard to find in the Czech Republic? It is for a lady about 32 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Joyce, That's tough. I lived in the U.S. for a number of years and every time I went to visit my family in the Czech Republic, I found it harder and harder to bring gifts that would be original or special. A lot of the things that didn't use to be available in the Czech Republic are now easy to find here. You could either bring something that your friend is into or something that is uniquely American. Fun spices and spice mixes if she likes to cook. Your favorite book(s) if she likes to read books in English. U.S.-made chocolates and candy... I would avoid bringing glass, ceramics, jewelry, decorative items such as potpourri, scented candles, etc. because these are sold all over the place here. I would suggest a CD or DVD , something you like and is uniquly american such as Native American Culture - Music - CD or latest trend in..
Not sure about CD's but DVD's might be a problem - different TV system. Good idea, though. A couple of other thoughts - a "coffee table" photo book of your town or state a local cookbook (sometimes compiled by women's clubs or the chamber of commerce) a bottle of local wine or a nice selection from New York State or California but remember, the best gift you are going to bring is probably "you".

About DVD -- not to argue, just for info, the dual systems, (able to play both US and EU standards) PAL NTSC like this one http://www.geodatasys.com/vcr.htm and 'region-free' DVD players, like this http://www.regioncodefreedvd.com/toshiba700.html are more widespread in EU then is US , (probably because US movies and music are so popular but it is true that you cannot completly assume it, .. some people do not use CD players any more, moving to Ipods and MP3 players -- and so a nice, good old oldfashioned book, may be a safer bet.
Hi, Well, I just returned from the BEAUTIFUL MAGICAL city of Prague! Ate dinner on the roof you the U Prince Hotel in the old town square. The view at night should not be missed....and the food was wonderful. I brought my friend a Disneyland embroidered hooded sweat jacket with Mickey and the 55 year celebration on the back. She seemed to like it. Thanks for all your help - it was appreciated.
