Seems like you have a fine place here. I am Czech born, but I've lived in England, Scotland, Sweden and the United States for almost 40 years now. I am a web site developer/designer and I moonlight as an architect on the side. I live in South Orange County (the OC), California, in the City of Mission Viejo. Translated from Spanish, in Czech it means "Stara Mise" which is odd since there is no mission here at all and the city is only 20 years old. But it is nice here - it is the safest city in the US. I invite you to visit my web site http://www.bouncingczech.com where I infrequently post musings about various cultural and social oddities and oddball happenings that either I or my friends experienced. I prefer to write in English - my Czech is more or less frozen in 1968 and my vernacular is that of an 18-year old student. I am married, for many moons now, to an American girl from Kentucky. Remarkably, we get on splendidly together even though I won her in a poker game in Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas during the crazy nineties. Skiing is my favorite sport. I shred Mammoth Mountain and the mountains around Lake Tahoe every winter to confetti. In the summer, I like nothing better than riding my Seadoo at 100 km per hour down the Colorado River. Yes, I cook for fun, even clean up after myself, but I don't sew my own dresses. I go to churches only if the architecture merits a visit. I do not hold private conversations with God and I really have no time for those who claim to. I would like to run for political office at some point, but I am prevented from that by less then virtuous past and certain harmless vices that may bubble to the surface during the campaign. Despite that I only spent four hours in jail once and that was voluntary and enough of a deterrent not to commit any crime. Ever.

Thank you. I see you live in Karlin. I know it well. I attended the "prumyslova skola" on Karlinske namesti - behind the church, for three years. I think it's a hairdressing school now. Is "Labuznik", the bar, still on Sokolovska? That is where we pretended to be adults and drank wine. It was still there few years ago...I walked through Karlin about 2 months after the floods and it was pretty depressing. But I think now it 's a nice place to live. I read your article in Czech in the other forum. It was astonishingly good!

Small world, isn't it? I know the school you mean but I can't say I've ever looked to see what sort of school it is. And I don't know if Labuznik is still there but I'll have a look out for both of them next time I'm walking down there. Can you remember how far up Sokolovska Labuznik was? In between Florenc and Karlinske nam? Or further up from K nam?

You're right, Karlin is a lovely place to live. If I could work out how to put photos on this, I'd show you one from our balcony in Lyckovo nam, looking out on the park and the beautiful school in the square. I've also got a couple of photos of the floods you'd be interested in.

Look forward to hearing more from you on MCR - the friendly site!

That must be what it looked like when Bouncing Czech saw it - what a mess! Although, actually, given that the water completely flooded the whole of the ground floor of buildings, they must have done a good job of clearing out the mud and rubbish. I thought it would have been dirtier than that.

I've got a good photo of the flood water still there. I know you can put photos on here, I just don't know how to do it...

You may use this site to upload a photo. I've never tried to do it, but just now:

It seems you pay by allowing some ads added to your picture 8)

Sorry, Karel. I'd just not techie enough to work it out! But if anyone would like to see my flood photo of Karlin, just pm me your email address. It's quite dramatic, especially if you know the area.

Fancy that! When were you here last? There have been some big changes, even in the 18 months we've been here, with a new by-pass opening that runs parallel to Sokolovksa down to Invalidovna.

I was there last about 10 years ago. I was somewhat shocked at all the changes. I went to look at Krizikova ulice, where our apartment used to be.

I think you'd like the changes since then. The flood gave people the opportunity to renovate the buildings and some of them are really beautiful. The flood photo I have is actually of Krizikova so if you'd like to see it, pm me your email address.

And what are you doing, posting now? What time is it there, for heaven's sake?!

I think I might actually have done it, with a bit of help from Eso. Krizikova in Karlin, in the 20002 floods. If it doesn't work first time, I'll have another go...
