A while ago, I heard on TV that Prague is the most haunted city in Europe. Is this true? I know that some of the buildings in Prague date back many hundreds of years. Presumably, this is the reason? Does anyone have any more knowledge or experience of this? I love a good ghost story! :D

If you go in the center sometimes you can find fliers for the Prague haunted tour, which is a night walk. I have yet to be on it but I really want to go.

That is an interesting question, although I believe the answer would be down to subjective opinions. Prague has had its fair share of haunted tales and occurences alike, but so has cities such as London and Rome for example. If you are referring to the gothic architecture and cultural integration, then Prague may be the winner.
If not, than I would say other European cities/towns such as Bucharest, Budapest and Lucedio would be up there too.

I was born in Olomouc, but lived in Prague for 10 years. I had a few experiences with ghosts. I never really wanted to admit this to myself but it's true. One that freaked me out the most happened in my home city, when I was about 8 years old, in my grandmother's apartment. Some of them happened on Russian Street in Prague 3-Zizkov (very haunted). It is always something you want to push in back of your mind...
Now I live in San Francsico and I'm more aware of what's going on , but compare to Prague this is nothing.
The whole city is basically build on burial grounds. So many battles have been fought and so many people died there. Just visiting Prague, without any ghostly experiences, is quite overwhelming. You can feel the history, it's very deep, smothering sense of someone constantly watching you.
But very beautiful and colorful. There is no other city like Prague that I personally know.
Anyway it's worth of visiting. I do recommend it. There is so much to be learned about Prague and Czech Republic, after all it is called the "Heart of Europe".

Thanks, "hotd". This is just the kind of stuff I like to hear. I've never visited Prague (yet), or even the Czech Republic, but I suspect the atmosphere is very much the way you describe it. And the story that freaked you out...? I'd love to hear about it! And the sightings on Russian Street...? The suspence is killing me!!!!! :

You can pray for the rest of these poor erring souls.

On the other hand, seen from a Buddhist point of view, they are still there because they are tied to the city by their love for it (one of the illusions of this world of ours) and, in a way, they protect it.

I remember an anecdote reported on television here in France. A young couple had invested in a farm for their holidays and week-ends. They discovered their barn was haunted. They prayed for the ghost and told it it could remain there as long as it pleased if it felt happy that way. After a couple of years, the farm was completely renovated and fully equipped.

Apparently the ghost protected it from burglars as one night the police arrested a gang of three who were inside howling like madmen. They always refused to say what happened.

Perhaps there are similar cases of protective ghosts in Prague.
