After spending 4-5 days in Prague the very end of November we are looking to plan several overnight trips other interesting places in CZ. In total we have two weeks. We are looking to use public transportation and are considering using bus vs. train? Thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

There a lot of options, i always recommend Cesky Krumlov, but try Karlovy Vary and Pilsen, they are closed to Prague, the czech usually only offer Prague but around Bohemia there are a lot of beatuful places, just not recommend north Moravia and north bohemia, and try stayng at a Penzion that are relative cheap. :D 8)

Thank you for the suggestions brcek. We were not sure as we have heard many things/places are "shut down" for the season outside of Prague.

Which would you suggest for transportation trains vs. busses?

Kutna hora (one day), Telc (one day), Olomouc (2 days with some castles), Terezin (1 day). I would do all three spa cities as they are not far from each other: Frantiskovy Lazne, karlovy Vary, Marianske Lazne.

By my opinion, bus is faster.

    Hi dzguy!

I'm happy to hear that someone is coming to the Czech Republic for a nice, long two-week period! :) There really are a lot of options for places to visit outside of Prague for an overnight trip.

    - Český Krumlov is an absolute must! You should spend at least one night there.

    - I love Southern Bohemia in general and I think you could easily spend a few days visiting the small, picturesque towns there, such as Jindřichův Hradec, Třeboň, Tábor and the UNESCO-protected little town of Slavonice near the Austrian border. You can base yourselves in Jindřichův Hradec for two or three nights and take trips from there.

    - Karlovy Vary should also be visited, possibly along with Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně as has been suggested by others.

    - I also hear that Plzeň is nice. Haven't been but am planning to visit.

    - In Southern Moravia, I recommend the Znojmo area - Znojmo itself, plus Mikulov, Lednice, Valtice... Very pretty.

Virtually all castles and chateaus (with a few exceptions) are closed in November, which is a little bit of a pity, but it is still a pleasure to just walk around the towns, take pictures, enjoy the local food, stop at tea rooms and cafés to warm up... Also, it is not true that everything shuts down in the fall and winter. Museums and galleries should stay open.

As far as taking a bus or a train, it largely depends on where you're going. I always start at www.idos.cz, enter my departure and arrival towns and see what results I get. Buses are often faster while trains give you room to stretch your legs and move about, and an opportunity to use a restroom (however basic), which may be a good thing on longer trips. The above site will help you out.

    Good luck planning your trip!

Thank you VERY much for the reply! We will read up on the destinations you have provided and probably have more questions then. Our excitement at visiting CZ is barely containable and we wish we were going now. Thank you again.
