Could someone tell me what that means? Also, does anyone know who wrote the song before Daniel Landa covered it?

Morituri te salutant - Latin quotation; allegedly, gladiators condemned to death greeted the emperor when entering the arena. Literally, it means those who are dying greet you. Originally, the song was composed and sung by Karel Kryl in 1965 (LP Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka).

Cheers. Is the song originally about the Slovak National Uprising in 1943? I heard a story that it was, and that Landa changed some of the lyrics so that the song was about resistance to Communism etc. Is this right?

I don't think Landa changed anything in the song originally From Karel Kryl. All i can say is that he 's used to say something about the fact K.Kryl did many thing for Czech People, when Russian were in the country just before singing that song.
I also think that, even if the song was created for a particular event, such as you mentionned, it can apply to every other such as communist dictature etc.

I agree with you, it's one of my favourite from Landa. But he has so many other songs which are very catchy and beautiful (so as " Pozdrav z fronty")

I very much like this song too. But I prefer Kryl´s version to Landa´s. Kryl´s songs are very powerful, not only the melody, but also the texts. Enjoy it! :D
