I'm from Jacksonville, FL U.S.A. I just joined this forum within the past hour. My hubby found the blog, My Czech Republic, last night and forwarded me the link. I am quite impressed by all the information that one can find here about the Czech Republic. We're traveling to Prague in October and will be staying there from the 15th through the 23rd. As we've only booked our flights thus far, we're investigating hotels and sites to see. My great grandparents [Michael Kovach/Mihaly Kovacs and Anna Varchola] were born in Czechoslovakia, 1864-1870. Unfortunately, their birthplace and any additional information is sketchy at best. So, I'm just getting in touch with my Czech/Slovakian heritage!
Welcome! You will probably find here all you need to know and more...... Read the website information for ideas re accommodation and enertainment........and then get into Message Board. If you don't see what you are looking for, use option Search and put in your key word. I am sure lots of information concerning your "key word" will come up. While in Prague, make sure you also plan to see anything in National Theatre. I suggest ballet Sipkova Ruzenka, opera La Traviata or comical opera Cert a Kaca. All three are on at the end of your stay. All are very popular and you need to e-mail ahead and communicate with them to keep tickets for you to be picked up at the theatre ticket office. Good luck in your search. I am sure you will be delighted in discovering Prague.

Then I suggest you take him to see Cert a Kaca. Even kids get it so if he is affraid of being bored, this will entertain him.
Thank you for your recommendation! I've forwarded this info to my hubby so that we can begin to schedule our time in Prague and elsewhere in the Czech Republic. We're thinking a few days in Prague and then venturing to other smaller cities. See the tours ... any specific recommendations? On our previous visit to Hungary, [Heviz, Keszthely, Budapest], we made a one-day trip to Satu Mare, Romania, to see my grandfather / great grandparents birthplace ... so I like to see more than the bigger cities. :wink:
Cesky Krumlov is delightful and not to be missed - 3 1/3 hrs by bus from Prague. Are you planning to rent a car? Read this website for ideas - there are many pictures from smaller towns. Telc is lovely. MANY castles all around Prague and on longer trips.
Is that a tour bus? We've noted some of the tours mentioned through this forum. Thank you ... yes, we absolutely will be taking in some castles! We saw some in Hungary--but didn't really tour any. Saw the ruins of a fort/castle outside Keszthely.
Are you there again? We should stop meeting like this :lol: Bus to Cesky Krumlov is regular bus leaving from Florence bus station. No need to take a tour as old town is made for walking alone not with the group.....and you take tours of the castle anyway right there. I would suggest at least one night - better two nights if you want to take few tours of the castle (biggest in CR I think) and see gardens. Lovely restaurants, lovely streets to wonder about also at night (very safe). We stayed two nights and it was perfect. If interested search here in discussions for Cesky Krumlov and you will come up with all we talked about before.
OK ... I'm back now! Thank for the tips ... you are certainly helping to build our itinerary. Say, do you have any particular tips for a quaint 3-star hotel in Prague to book for several days? We've read about several, but one of them that my hubby found with some 143 reviews mentioned a lumpy mattress. :cry:
Hi Julie, if you'll visit Cesky Krumlov,don't forget Ceske Budejovice and nearby castle Hluboka.Is very nice and I think that some american film was shot there.If you'll have more time try to visit Moravia ,Brno is 2.5 ours from Prague.Moravian castles are nice too.Lednice,Vranov nad Dyji. Before i read the other replies i was going to recommend you to visit Brno,Telc and Cesky krumlov but it seems everyone beat me to it I guess if we are all recommending them those places must be doing something right.Cesky krumlov is a must and i think during the summer they hold a music festival. Enjoy the Czech Republic! It is a great country.
Yes, Hluboka is georgous! I was married there. The American Film shot there was Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. Ceske Budejovice is also very nice. Be sure to try the original Budweiser there.
