Hi from a newbie. This looks like just the place for my questions to find some answers. I have 6 days from leaving Budapest to arriving in Prague. I am thinking about taking the train from Budapest to Brno and then using train and bus to see some smaller places. I've seen recommendations to visit Policka, would like to see (along with the other millon tourists) Cesky K and Cesky B, and notice suggestions here and elsewhere about Jindrachuv Hradec. What is hrd at this distance is to work out a sensible route. Help appreciated.

I agree with Sigma about Olomouc

Another nice place to see is Bucovice a beautiful little town not far from Brno with a very popular castle and gardens.

Thanks for the rapid responses. So what about staying in Brno for a couple of days and doing day trips around by bus/train? Except Brno loks like another big city. Could I easily find accomodation in smaller places?

What type of accomodation are you looking at in Brno? The main hostel is only open July and August. After that, you can look for a pension or a hotel.

There are some really interesting caves near Brno but the name of them escapes me at the moment. Apparently they are not too difficult to get to from Brno.

I'm happy with a pension. Doesn't look like much is advertised online tho. Can I arrive and find something in September?
    Caves!! shudder!!!

Can I use local busses or trains to easily do daytrips around here?

I think there are a few posters who currently live in Brno, so they might be able to give you a better idea about places to stay.

Taking local buses and trains should be no problem for day trips.

If your planning on Ceske Budejovice, Cesky Krumlov, and Jindrichuv Hradec, you might try also Telc.

Right, I have the maps out! Currently thinking of staying in Brno and doing day trips to as many recommended places as can manage depending on bus timetables. Then to Cesky Budejovic for 2 nights, with a day trip to Cesky Krumlov. Then train to Prague.

Can anyone suggest pleasant budget places to stay? We like pension/B&B over hotels. Mid 50s couple.

České Budějovice is a good base for seeing Southern Bohemia. I think that Český Krumlov is a must see and if you end up having more time in that area I would recommend a trip to Třeboň. It is 30-45 minutes by bus from České Budějovice. The town has a beautiful square and is famous for its ponds.

    Have a great time!

We stayed 2 nights in Cesky Krumlov and in Ceske Budejovice 1 night and we both agreed that there was simply not much to see in Ceske Budejovice and we were glad it was only one night there. If we would not include beautiful castle Hluboka (worth seeing) by city bus (short ride out of town), it would be total loss of time. We had to stay there one night/two days because of bus schedule (going to Prague). CB has nice large main square. If we would be driving, we would leave earlier.

On other hand, Cesky Krumlov was outstanding, incredible number of nice accommodations (even very nice hostels) some of the restaurants are quite reasonable. CK Castle one of the biggest in Europe - thus there are 4 different tours (we took 3 of them) + interesting summer theatre nice castle gardens...(free). Very romantic town, you need lots of time to soak up the athmosphere of the streets - day and night are beautiful there. You won't be sorry.

OK, thanks for that tip. I had just assumed that Ceske Krumlov would be more expensive with less accommodation. Also, yes, we would need to then catch the train to Prague. Might rethink and spend 2 days in CK. Any particluar places to suggest for a couple of nights?

Heading out to Istanbul in 3 days!!
