Advice please on whether the tap water in Prague is drinkable or whether people have to be careful and boil it first or stick to bottled. No disrespect implied to the Czech Republic - there are many parts of Europe where caution makes sense over this and I certainly intend when I visit to drink a variety of stronger liquids as well as water!!
Water quality in Prague (average values): Escherichia coli: 0 KTJ/100 ml Hardness: cca 1.5 mmol/l Nitrates: 33 mg/l pH: 7.55 Fe: 0.14 mg/l Cloudiness: 0.5 ZFn http://www.pvk.cz/show.asp?column=37
I was able to drink tap water without any problems whatsoever, but you have to ask for it (tap water) in restaurants. If you simply ask for water you'll get bottled water and be charged for it. Also, not sure if there are a lot of drinking fountains (aka water fountains here in the US) where you're from, but I don't remember seeing even one the entire time I was in the Czech Republic. For "walking around" water, you'll probably want to buy the bottled stuff. Susan
I've never had problems with drinking tap water as well. Suzan, there is one water fountain for drinking near Wenceslav Square, right outside the BaƄa shop.
I've seen them too...but that doesn't mean I drink from them. The idea just takes away any desire to drink water that I previously had. I just go with the bottled water. Oh, and I used to think that I got sick from Czech water, because I got sick the first 3 times I went to Czech, but I figured out it was from the lepek (gluten) in the milk. So no worries about the water. It actually is pretty good on a hot day.
Ahoj A little bit off topic, but since we're talking about voda here. I lived In Phoenix for about a year, I thought their tap voda was the worst tasting ever yuck, yuck. After drinking that you will drink anything I thought. Until my madzerinlo' who lives in Up State New York (pretty scenery by the way) took us to a place where they have minera'lka voda. Jedna taiste of that will knock your klobouk off your hlava ! To me that was the nejhorsi taste ever. 8) 8) Dekuji Na shledanou
Animal, I love how you throw in Czech words with your English. I should try doing that when I talk to my husband.
Dekuji, it seems to help me more with this great language. One day I hope to go to the solid Czech section and be able to read, and reply to topics. Na shledanou 8) 8)
Once we learned in biology, that if you feel sick from some water what you drinked abroad (and didn't boil it), it cannot be only because of the water quality, but because of you aren't accustomed to the "structure" of the water...people what live there normally drink the same water and don't feel sick...and it didn't rest with if the abroad is CR or Britain...
