Is it common for Czech diners to ask for leftovers to be packed up to-go when they can't finish their meals in restaurants? If so, how would one ask for it? ("Could you doggy-bag it" may be misunderstood with some kind of canine parcel....
Czech portions tend to be more reasonable than some of the gargantuan ones you find on this side of the pond. The food is usually great, too. I never had enough left for a "doggy-bag". :wink:
Like Glenn, I've never left anything in a Czech restaurant, even when I've had pork knuckle - the dish that is always translated as 'pork knee', which always makes me chuckle. (Sorry, that rhyme just came out!) It's served very impressively at the very good Pilsner chain of restaurants (Kolkovna, Celnice & Olympia, for those of you in Prague), hanging on a sort of metal frame so it doesn't roll off the plate. I went to Olympia, which I think is the nicest of the three, with a friend of mine from England and she took a photo of it! I have to say that if I hadn't been a Czech butcher's daughter and brought up on huge quantities of meat, even I might have had to resort to a doggy bag then, although I'm not sure that I would find it quite so appealing cold!
Well it's quite a common practice here in Malta. However, if we ask for a 'doggy bag' it's usually taken quite literally and the leftovers are packaged in aluminium foil for the dog If we just say that we want to take any uneaten (and untouched) food home, then it is placed in a container and taken to be enjoyed the next day We wouldn't do it in fancy restaurants though.
Ladies can ask for half portion in Czech Restaurant (i.e. 2 dumplings instead of 4 or more) = polovicni porci prosim. Locals do it, however, it could be difficult in restaurant aiming for foreigners. In honest Czech restaurant for locals it would be 1/2 price, in some it would be a bit more because meat cannot be divided.
Only ladies can ask for it? Can children or men? We have children's menu's here and in some places you must be under 10 or 12 years of age to order from it. The Czech restaurants in Chicago give you more than most American restaurants. Perhaps they think Americans are pigs so they try to give us enough and end up over-compensating. :wink:
Anyone can ask for it, but as someone pointed out, it's not really worth it. Half portion for 70% the price. It's good deal in McD' though. If you ask them to put your ice cream to two cones, you usually get almost the same amount of ice cream in cone as you would get for the price of normal one.
Hi there mrskaykins this is a very common occurence in Liverpool UK if there is any food left after a party for instance people will always take home a doggybag full especially me lol
I personally have never heard about a "czech doggie bag"... You pretty much have to finish your plate or you will have to "go to your room" :wink: Seriously, I don't know how it is in the Czech Republic now but back in my day (10 yrs ago) the waiter would look at you like you are crazy..
It's common in pizzerias, well maybe not common but it's okay if you ask them. I'm not sure about other restaurants, i've never done it and i don't know anyone who had.
