This maybe a goofy question: I'm planning a trip to Cz in late July and I'm wondering how to dress. I want to pack as light as possible since I'll be backpacking through Hungary and Slovakia. Any suggestions. I'm wanting to blend in - and not look too dumb when I'm out at night. Should I leave my Kakis (tan cotton pants) at home? Do people wear mostly dark pants? Thanks Clueless
Hey, The only european country I've visited is France, never the CR. But others on here have said that they can very easily spot who the American tourists were walking around Prague by how they were dressed. So I wouldn't wear jeans, t-shirts, anything flashy. People there are generally more dressed up, just don't ever do it. Hopefully others can add to this. And hey, how come I can't make this avatar of Pavel Nedved bigger!?!?
Hi Clueless, I'd basically say the opposite to what hockeygirl has. Wearing jeans (or khakis), sneakers, T-shirt will blend you in fairly easily. .. Jirka
I second Jirka, during my trips to CZ I think I've seen more czech's wear jeans and regulare english logo t-shits than most americans here. Good luck, and have fun.
I second Joshua for a change Jeans are by far the best choice. The only jeans I`d avoid are the baggy ones. When I was last back home a year ago, I overheard two teenage girls sneer at a guy whose jeans would`ve been too loose even for a sumo wrestler. Giggling, pointing at him and making cutting remarks like....hey wake up, this is gone 2 years ago, and so on, the girls were having fun. The guy blushed and got cracking to get lost. Your Levis jeans and a T-shirt/shirt/polo-shirt are a safe option. Karel
Well I was just repeating what someone else on here has said. There was a thread about this subject a couple weeks ago and someone wrote that he could easily tell who the american tourists were by their dress, that the distinction was glaringly obvious. If you're unsure of what to wear to a place or occasion, just show up naked, it's that easy
Now you`re talking Hockeygirl! There`s however one important detail worthy mentioning before going out without a stitch on. You must be a female and a real beauty. Don`t forget that you`ll be competing with Czech girls. Daringly enough, some Czech girls wear skirts as short as their belts. So it could be a bitter disappointment not to be the first one to appear starkers in public . Hockeygirl are you ready to take the plunge and perform?
You shouldn't worry about the fashion unless you are a middle-aged female dressed in shorts. Shorts are not a common sight in European streets and they scream "American tourist". As for the baggy pants, they are definitely out. Thank God!
Thanks for the great responses. I'm a guy so I'm not going to attempt the threadless option... I'll just enjoy the ladies who do. ha ha One more question if I may: In case I go somewhere on my travels requiring something other then jeans... (I'm planning on taking a pair of jeans but..) does anyone wear the off-white Cargo pants or Kakis? or does this fit into the bagy pants category. Maybe I'll just buy a pair of black cotton pants when I get over there... And one more: Is it too cold for short sleeves at night at the clubs? Perhaps I should look at the weather reports. Thanks y'all.
I couldn't imagine going to a club without short sleeves! It gets so hot and steamy on the dance floor! But if it's cold, don't fret, many places such as Lucerna on Vaclavske Namesti, have a "coat closet" and will hang your sweater or jacket for a small fee.
