"Držet palce" (to hold thumbs in one's fists) is gesture which means "I wish you luck" So maybe in English - Drž mi palce - "cross your fingers for me"
Yes, or sometimes "keep your fingers crossed (for me)" But the expression (in English) "Holds thumbs for me" is used in South Africa.
Ah now, that's interesting. We use it in my family but I googled it just now and although it does come up a few times they are either nordic links (Kimi Raikkonen for example has a whole lot about it on his website), South African or American. I can't find an example of UK English..... So in my household we must have taken it directly from the German "Halt die Daumen" or possibly even my mother translated it from the Czech and that's how I got hold of it..... I certainly used it at school and so have possibly infected a further small group of UK English speakers
kibicz, "fingers crossed" is just the index and middle fingers crossed. Heh, it's not some mess of all of them in some sort of ridiculous entanglement...although that would be more interesting... cestina, in German it's not "Halt die Daumen" but "Die Daumen drücken." So while the Czech hold their thumbs, the Germans shake them. It's the same gesture of the thumb tucked into the fist, but accompanied by movement...
