In 1958 was published the almanac "Máj" (May) (named after a glorious romantic poem by Karel Hynek Mácha), which was very important for Czech literature. In the 90's of the 19th century, Czechs were persecuted by Austria, Czech literature was censored. This era is called "The Bach's Absolutism", after Austrian politician Alexandr Bach.

In the end of this decade came a liberalization - and the almanac Máj was the beginning. It was written by the best writers of that era - like Jan Neruda, Karolína Světlá, Vítězslav Hálek, Jakub Arbes or Karel Sabina. The whole 60's were influed by this book. It was one of the good (but not the best) eras of Czech literature.

I was searching for 1863, but I have found nothing very interesting. Just Jindřich Eckert, an important Czech fotographer, died. There is no article on English Wikipedia about them, there is just a Czech one and a German one, but the German one is very short. So the Czech one: http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jind%C5%99ich_Eckert :)
