Just my 2 cents...again. When I think of slob, I more think of the house than personal hygiene. Someone who doesn't pick up after themselves and someone who is not bothered by sitting in a mess. They could eat off a table that has clutter like mail and keys on it. Or they could sit and watch tv in a living room that has clothes thrown on the floor and dishes on the coffee table. That's not like most Czech men I know. Most of the Čech's I know, although they don't clean the house, they don't handle sitting in a messy one well. I think American men, although well groomed, are closer to slobs than Čech's but maybe that is just my iterpretation of a slob. I'd like to hear from more native English speakers on the word slob.
This is wierd: Dictionary.com give 3 definitions for a slob: 1. a slovenly or boorish person. 2. Irish English. mud or ooze, esp. a stretch of mud along a shore. 3. Chiefly Canadian American Heritage Dictionary defines it as: A person regarded as slovenly, crude, or obnoxious. And Wordnet defines it as: a coarse obnoxious person I wouldn't have thought of any of those. Well, anyway, that is not how it is used in my part of the country. A Thesaurus gives synonyms for slob as "good for nothing" "free-loader" "slacker" "idler" "lazybones" and "loafer" The synonyms above better describe how slob is used. If someone says to me, "He's a slob" I think of someone who may be well groomed but always has a sink full of dishes, clothes on the bathroom floor and beer bottles all over the livingroom.
how about lajdák - sorry if someone has mentioned it... or as far as clothing goes, ucouraná or ucouraný as an adjective?? or nedbalý nedbalá ? (the first would be more sloppiness i think and the second more carelessness or lack of concern? )
