I'm arriving in Prague on Wednesday but won't have a company mobile until the following week.

I need a temp mobile phone solution.

Can you recommend what provider to go with, cost and where I can get the sim card? I'll be staying in Vinohrady.

    Cheers ! :D

If you are going to call other mobile phones, take their provider - it will be cheaper. Otherwise, I think the prices are similar. Oskar seems to be the low priced one, but I have no experience with it.

There are three mobile companies, Eurotel, T-Mobile, Oskar. All of them offer a pre-paid sim card service. These are called Go, Twist and Oskarta respectively.

If you have a phone and need just the sim card, buy a no-phone set. These cost about 500, including about 300 credit for calling. If you need a phone, you can either buy a Go or Twist set with a phone (Oskar does nor offer these, afaik) which cost 2000 and more, or just buy some second-hand phone, if you need it for just a week. Just do not forget to ask if it works with pre-paid cards - some phones do not.

You can buy these sets in any phone or electronics shop, and of course in those companies's stores. The "recharging" coupons can be bought virtually anywhere.

While too late for Steve, I thought that I would nonetheless post my experience of "Oskarta", the PAYG SIM offering from Oskar Mobil :

I have used the Oskar networks PAYG offering, "Oskarta" since 2001.

During this time, I have always found coverage to be great, and the cost of the services reasonable too.

The fact that Oskar has a bilingual website - Czech & English, is very useful too, as is the fact that you can request network announcements in English as well.

You do need to top up your account at least once every six months, but for a regular visitor to Czecho that isnt a problem.

You can also top up online - type in the "secret number" from a top up card on the Oskar website, and you are topped up and ready to call, text, send / receive email, etc...

The mobile email service, which allows you to send and receive email to your phone as it were a text message is great too - you get an address in the form of : yourname@mujoskar.cz - the email will then be delivered to your mobile - handy for you , as you wont need to access your usual account via WAP or GPRS, or find an internet cafe, and handy for the people back at home to keep in touch with you , as they wont have to pay expensive foreign call rates, or international sms rates....
